Conclusion Of Horror Films
Chloe Bailey
Analysis
For my final research task I have analysed 3 horror film clips. This
has helped me to recognise the codes and conventions of the
horror genre, that appear in almost every film. What I have learnt
will help me when planning my film and also in the
cinematography. This will hopefully lead to producing a realistic
and believable horror opening.
Location
• The location should be in an isolated, quiet area eg: a
house, woods, park or a field.
• I will think carefully when deciding my final location for my
film opening as this is crucial to the atmosphere and success
of the film. it also needs to be believable to the audience but
also keep the gripped and interested in the film.
Sound and Lighting
• Non diegetic, incidental music should be used to open the film
and create tension for the audience.
• Diegetic sound can build up suspense eg:
rain, wind, breathing.
• No sound or music is also effective to create an eerie silence.
• Low key lighting is often used in horror films, to create an
ominous atmosphere.
Camera Shots/angles
• I need to include a wide range of shots in my film opening to
showcase what I have learnt.
• Popular camera shots in horror films are close up or medium
shots, with a focus pull to emphasis the subject.
• Camera angles often used are high angles because it makes
the subject look small and vulnerable.
Narrative
• I will keep to the stereotypical stock situation/narrative that
appeared in all 3 of my analysis. This will include:
• Protagonist – a young, vulnerable female
• Antagonist – Intimidating male
• Stock Characters – friends or family members
• Protagonist is in danger of the antagonist. The stock
characters get injured or hurt trying to save the protagonist.
