	 EIGHTEEN GRADE 12 ABM
students of St. John’s Institute went to
Hong Kong for their I-CARE, or Inter-
national Career-Related Exposure, on
March 31-April 5.
The I-CARE program is part of
the Work Immersion Class of the Se-
nior High School students of SJI, as the
school wants the students to be more
aware of the different work environ-
ments and cultures in the world.
	 Joining the ABM students were
four of their batchmates under the
STEM program.
	 They were accompanied by men-
tors Fraire Acupan and Julius Esparas.
	 Since the students will eventually
be pursuing business courses in col-
lege, most of the places they visited in
Hong Kong were the famous shopping
districts and night markets and relat-
ed enterprises so that they can be im-
mersed into trade-related techniques in
a major business hub in Asia.
	 Learning insights were gained
from their trips to Causeway Bay, Tsim
Sha Tsui, Citygate Outlets, and Mong
Kok. They also visited the famous Tem-
ple Street Night Market, where they
learned how to bargain and how sellers
get people to buy their goods.
	 They also visited Lingnan Univer-
sity, an SJI partner school with a strong
ABM program.

CHINESE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
CIS
Katie and I pose with
her other friends who
are studying at CIS as
well. For college, we all
plan to go abroad, spe-
cifically in the US and
the UK.
	 The Chinese Interna-
tional School is a private
international school in Hong
Kong, China. It is one of
the most expensive schools
in Hong Kong and widely
recognised as the best aca-
demically focused schools in
Hong Kong.
	 The school opened in
1983, with an initial intake
of approximately 75 students
in Years 1 to 3. Its first loca-
tion was at 7 Eastern Hospi-
tal Road in Causeway Bay.
Now, it’s in Braemar Hill.

I learned that in CIS, students are or-
ganised into separate Primary and Secondary
“schools” but share the same campus, similar
school days and a linked curriculum.
	 The Primary division has approximately
600 students aged 4 to 11 from Reception to
Year 6, while the Secondary division has approx-
imately 900 students aged 11 to 18 from Years 7
to 13.
The students are also very competitive
applicants to Ivy League schools such as Har-
vard, Yale, UPenn, Brown, Dartmouth, Colum-
bia, and Cornell.
LEARNINGS
Causeway
BayStephanie Choa, my best
friend and soul sister, pose
for a picture at one
of the busy streets there.
Causeway Bay has a complete range of restaurants to please
the many types of shoppers who descend on this bustling area of
downtown Hong Kong. Everything from quick street food snacks,
hole-in-the-wall local eateries, international fast food, and a fair
number of fine dining restaurants can be found in Causeway Bay.
My personal suggestions include the cheapest food stalls you
can see along the road, inluding a couple of restaurants called Din
Tai Fung and Seasons by Oliver Lee, which are both rather posh.
DISNEYLAND
Hong Kong Disneyland is a theme park
located on reclaimed land in Penny’s Bay,
Lantau Island. It’s inside the Disneyland
Resort and it is owned and managed by
Hong Kong International Theme Parks.
During one whole day at the so-called
happiest place on earth, I learned that I
wasn’t the scaredy cat I though I was. I
rode multiple rides that were rather
thrilly, if I say so myself.
LINGNAN
UNIVERSITY
HONG KONG MAGAZINE 9
Lingnan University (LN/LU), formerly
called Lingnan College is the only public
liberal arts university in Hong Kong.
It aims to provide students with an edu-
cation in the liberal arts tradition and has
joined the Global Liberal Arts Alliance
since 2012.
Lingnan University became the first uni-
versity in Hong Kong to accomplish the
goal of providing 4-year full residence for
all undergraduates and currently, 80%
Lingnan students are able to go on ex-
change for a term during their undergrad-
uate study.
In 2015, Lingnan University was selected
as one of the “Top 10 Asian Liberal Arts
Colleges” by Forbes.

What to do in...
CAUSEWAY BAY
RESEARCH
TELLS US
Causeway Bay is Hong Kong’s en-
ergetic retail heart. Luxury malls,
department stores and boutiques
pack its western end, while bargain
hunters roam the Jardine’s Crescent
street market. Numerous dining
options, from upscale restaurants to
street-food stalls, dot the area. Local
meeting points include Hong Kong
Central Library, with its historic col-
lections, and tranquil Victoria Park,
popular for Tai chai sessions.
WHATILEARNED
THERE
You could easily spend days in Cause-
way Bay, one of the busiest neighbor-
hoods on Hong Kong Island. Jam-
packed with restaurants and shops,
but also featuring Hong Kong’s main
library, as well as the Island’s largest
public park, there truly is something for
everyone.
I personally enjoyed my time there.
LINGNAN
UNIVERSITY
We spent a whole afternoon in Lingnan and attended about
three different talks ranging from the school, its projects, and
business. I really enjoyed it because we learned something
new and had fun listening to professors.
TSIM SHA TSUI
Ths being my second trip to Hong Kong,
I knew that we would be visiting so many shopping distrcits, so
I made sure that I'd bring enough pocket money especially when
we went here at TST.
CHINESE INT. SCHOOL
We were given a great campus tour by
Alex and Ryan, who are going
to attend Bates and Yale for college,
respectively.
Facilities
The school's campus is
made up of seven build-
ings, called "blocks" and
connected by open-air
walkways. Facilities in-
clude:
Specialised labs and stu-
dios for the sciences (8),
design technology/prod-
uct design (14) and the
visual arts (4).
A 200-seat auditorium.
A 200-seat black-box dra-
ma studio.
Four gymnasia – one con-
vertible to an assembly
hall with capacity for e
ither the whole Prima-
ry or whole Secondary
school.
A 25-meter indoor swim-
ming pool, fitness room
and outdoor climbing
wall.
An outdoor sports field
shared with The Hong
Kong Japanese School,
equipped with a football
pitch and two multipur-
pose ball courts, suitable
for tennis, basketball, vol-
leyball or netball.
Learning technology, in-
cluding laptops and other
devices; a school intranet
called "Moon
gate"; and Gmail-based
e-mail accounts for stu-
dents and staff to facili-
tate communication and
collaboration. The school
also subscribes to various
educational websites and
databases.
TEMPLE STREET
Temple Street is a
street located in
the areas of Jordan
and Yau Ma Tei in
Kowloon, Hong
Kong. It is known
for its night market
and as one of the
busiest flea mar-
kets at night in the
territory. The night
market lies in the
Yau Ma Tei, Jordan
part of the street.
Popular with tour-
ists and locals alike
in the evening, it
is also common
to see the place
crowded at dusk.
It sells cheap mer-
chandise and food
items. The place is
sometimes known
as "Men's Street".
Another must-do here
is to go shopping. I did,
and I really enjoyed it.
LEARNINGS
AND SUMMARY
The difference between each area of Hong Kong is MAS-
SIVE. While choosing where to stay when in Hong Kong, I
had absolutely no idea about the characteristics of each is-
land and neighborhood in the city. We chose, in the end, to
stay in Kowloon, and believe that this is a good location for
tourists visiting the city. Kowloon is an incredibly local part
of the city, and has a lot going on in terms of markets, restau-
rants, shops, and MTR (subway) connections. It’s also sort
of in the middle ofthe city, so it’s pretty easy to get essentially
everywhere you’d want to go in Hong Kong.

  • 3. Causeway Bay, a vibrant and busy place in Hong Kong, brought smiles and laughter to us all on our first day tour. Field Trip Details HONG KONG MAGAZINE 3 EIGHTEEN GRADE 12 ABM students of St. John’s Institute went to Hong Kong for their I-CARE, or Inter- national Career-Related Exposure, on March 31-April 5. The I-CARE program is part of the Work Immersion Class of the Se- nior High School students of SJI, as the school wants the students to be more aware of the different work environ- ments and cultures in the world. Joining the ABM students were four of their batchmates under the STEM program. They were accompanied by men- tors Fraire Acupan and Julius Esparas. Since the students will eventually be pursuing business courses in col- lege, most of the places they visited in Hong Kong were the famous shopping districts and night markets and relat- ed enterprises so that they can be im- mersed into trade-related techniques in a major business hub in Asia. Learning insights were gained from their trips to Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui, Citygate Outlets, and Mong Kok. They also visited the famous Tem- ple Street Night Market, where they learned how to bargain and how sellers get people to buy their goods. They also visited Lingnan Univer- sity, an SJI partner school with a strong ABM program.

  • 6. CHINESE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL CIS Katie and I pose with her other friends who are studying at CIS as well. For college, we all plan to go abroad, spe- cifically in the US and the UK. The Chinese Interna- tional School is a private international school in Hong Kong, China. It is one of the most expensive schools in Hong Kong and widely recognised as the best aca- demically focused schools in Hong Kong. The school opened in 1983, with an initial intake of approximately 75 students in Years 1 to 3. Its first loca- tion was at 7 Eastern Hospi- tal Road in Causeway Bay. Now, it’s in Braemar Hill. I learned that in CIS, students are or- ganised into separate Primary and Secondary “schools” but share the same campus, similar school days and a linked curriculum. The Primary division has approximately 600 students aged 4 to 11 from Reception to Year 6, while the Secondary division has approx- imately 900 students aged 11 to 18 from Years 7 to 13. The students are also very competitive applicants to Ivy League schools such as Har- vard, Yale, UPenn, Brown, Dartmouth, Colum- bia, and Cornell. LEARNINGS
  • 7. Causeway BayStephanie Choa, my best friend and soul sister, pose for a picture at one of the busy streets there. Causeway Bay has a complete range of restaurants to please the many types of shoppers who descend on this bustling area of downtown Hong Kong. Everything from quick street food snacks, hole-in-the-wall local eateries, international fast food, and a fair number of fine dining restaurants can be found in Causeway Bay. My personal suggestions include the cheapest food stalls you can see along the road, inluding a couple of restaurants called Din Tai Fung and Seasons by Oliver Lee, which are both rather posh.
  • 8. DISNEYLAND Hong Kong Disneyland is a theme park located on reclaimed land in Penny’s Bay, Lantau Island. It’s inside the Disneyland Resort and it is owned and managed by Hong Kong International Theme Parks. During one whole day at the so-called happiest place on earth, I learned that I wasn’t the scaredy cat I though I was. I rode multiple rides that were rather thrilly, if I say so myself.
  • 9. LINGNAN UNIVERSITY HONG KONG MAGAZINE 9 Lingnan University (LN/LU), formerly called Lingnan College is the only public liberal arts university in Hong Kong. It aims to provide students with an edu- cation in the liberal arts tradition and has joined the Global Liberal Arts Alliance since 2012. Lingnan University became the first uni- versity in Hong Kong to accomplish the goal of providing 4-year full residence for all undergraduates and currently, 80% Lingnan students are able to go on ex- change for a term during their undergrad- uate study. In 2015, Lingnan University was selected as one of the “Top 10 Asian Liberal Arts Colleges” by Forbes.

  • 15. What to do in... CAUSEWAY BAY RESEARCH TELLS US Causeway Bay is Hong Kong’s en- ergetic retail heart. Luxury malls, department stores and boutiques pack its western end, while bargain hunters roam the Jardine’s Crescent street market. Numerous dining options, from upscale restaurants to street-food stalls, dot the area. Local meeting points include Hong Kong Central Library, with its historic col- lections, and tranquil Victoria Park, popular for Tai chai sessions. WHATILEARNED THERE You could easily spend days in Cause- way Bay, one of the busiest neighbor- hoods on Hong Kong Island. Jam- packed with restaurants and shops, but also featuring Hong Kong’s main library, as well as the Island’s largest public park, there truly is something for everyone. I personally enjoyed my time there.
  • 16. LINGNAN UNIVERSITY We spent a whole afternoon in Lingnan and attended about three different talks ranging from the school, its projects, and business. I really enjoyed it because we learned something new and had fun listening to professors.
  • 17. TSIM SHA TSUI Ths being my second trip to Hong Kong, I knew that we would be visiting so many shopping distrcits, so I made sure that I'd bring enough pocket money especially when we went here at TST.
  • 18. CHINESE INT. SCHOOL We were given a great campus tour by Alex and Ryan, who are going to attend Bates and Yale for college, respectively. Facilities The school's campus is made up of seven build- ings, called "blocks" and connected by open-air walkways. Facilities in- clude: Specialised labs and stu- dios for the sciences (8), design technology/prod- uct design (14) and the visual arts (4). A 200-seat auditorium. A 200-seat black-box dra- ma studio. Four gymnasia – one con- vertible to an assembly hall with capacity for e ither the whole Prima- ry or whole Secondary school. A 25-meter indoor swim- ming pool, fitness room and outdoor climbing wall. An outdoor sports field shared with The Hong Kong Japanese School, equipped with a football pitch and two multipur- pose ball courts, suitable for tennis, basketball, vol- leyball or netball. Learning technology, in- cluding laptops and other devices; a school intranet called "Moon gate"; and Gmail-based e-mail accounts for stu- dents and staff to facili- tate communication and collaboration. The school also subscribes to various educational websites and databases.
  • 19. TEMPLE STREET Temple Street is a street located in the areas of Jordan and Yau Ma Tei in Kowloon, Hong Kong. It is known for its night market and as one of the busiest flea mar- kets at night in the territory. The night market lies in the Yau Ma Tei, Jordan part of the street. Popular with tour- ists and locals alike in the evening, it is also common to see the place crowded at dusk. It sells cheap mer- chandise and food items. The place is sometimes known as "Men's Street". Another must-do here is to go shopping. I did, and I really enjoyed it.
  • 20. LEARNINGS AND SUMMARY The difference between each area of Hong Kong is MAS- SIVE. While choosing where to stay when in Hong Kong, I had absolutely no idea about the characteristics of each is- land and neighborhood in the city. We chose, in the end, to stay in Kowloon, and believe that this is a good location for tourists visiting the city. Kowloon is an incredibly local part of the city, and has a lot going on in terms of markets, restau- rants, shops, and MTR (subway) connections. It’s also sort of in the middle ofthe city, so it’s pretty easy to get essentially everywhere you’d want to go in Hong Kong.
