This homework assignment asks 5th grade students to consider whether they would want to live on another planet. It provides questions for students to discuss with their family and friends and to read two attached articles about the positives and negatives of living on another planet. Students are asked to record their discussions in their homework book. The assignment prepares students for an upcoming class debate about living on another planet by having them gather information to support their own viewpoint. A separate math homework asks students to play an online tug of war game and solve word problems involving moving past zero in two moves. It also challenges students to write their own math problems for the class and a really difficult problem for a challenge wall.

This is a reading, thinking and discussing task.
Question: If living on another planet becomes
possible during your lifetime, would you do it?
- What is your first gut feeling about this?
- What do your family and friends think? Ask them what they would do and why.
- Now read the 2 attached articles to find out more. What would be the positives? What
would be the negatives? What questions would you have?
- Make a record in your homework book of what happened in your discussion at home.
We will have a class debate about this next week, so be prepared with lots of information to
support your own point of view!
