Demenzerkrankte und ihre Angehörige wissen um die österreichische Pflegelücke. Sie tut sich immer dann auf, wenn Pflege- und Betreuungsdienstleistungen nur eingeschränkt verfügbar sind. Denn wird man in Österreich pflegebedürftig, besteht derzeit die Wahl zwischen der (informellen) Betreuung durch Angehörige auf der einen Seite, und der stationären Versorgung im Alten- oder Pflegeheim auf der anderen Seite. Dazwischen gibt es kaum Angebote, die den unterschiedlichsten Bedürfnissen der Menschen mit Pflegebedarf und deren Angehörigen entsprechen würden. Gibt es diese Angebote doch in der Nähe, sind sie oft nicht leistbar. Die Schließung der Pflegelücke ist daher – vor allem auch in Zusammenhang mit Demenz – ein Gebot der Stunde. Zudem wirken sich aktuelle Überlegungen wie die Erschwerung des Zuganges zu den Pflegestufen I und II kontraproduktiv auf die Situation von Menschen mit Demenz aus. Aus sozialpolitischer Perspektive müssen daher dringend Maßnahmen getroffen werden, um die Lebensqualität von Betroffenen zu erhöhen.
