Hoag ordered pairs lesson 2
- 1. Instructional Objectives By the end of today’s lesson you will be able to identify the parts of a coordinate grid and correctly graph an ordered pair on a grid.

- #3 The picture to your right is a coordinate grid. We’re going to be using it to plot points so let me go over the parts of the grid. Along the bottom you will see the x axis.
- #4 The line all the way to the left that goes up is the Y-axis.
- #5 The point where the x and y axis meet is called the point of origin. This point is very important because it is where you start each time you need to plot a point.
- #6 These are ordered pairs. They tell you where to mark a point on the coordinate grid. The order of the numbers is very important. The first number tells you how far over from the point of origin you need to go. It is called the x coordinate. The second number tells you how far up you need to move it is called your y coordinate. The order of the numbers is very important. Remember first is x (over) and second is y (up). Also notice the way the numbers are written in parenthesis with a comma separating them. In the first pair you would start at the point of origin and go over 5 lines then up 3. To plot the second pair you would start at the point of origin and go over 4 lines then up 7 lines. The last ordered pair is the point of origin.
- #7 Here is an illustration of how you would find the ordered pair (2, 5). Notice the blue line starts at the point of origin then goes over two lines and up five.
