WATER PUPPET THEATER
About one thousand years ago, every year during the rice harvest festivals, farmers in Red River
Delta gathered for folk singing and dancing at village festivals. Water puppets were added to the
list of shows at these festivals. When water puppets first started, the stage was a rice field.
Today, the artists hide behind a screen at the water puppet theater. They stand in water then use
sticks to make the puppets move and tell a story. Sometimes there is a band that plays
Vietnamese music.
A traditional show always starts with Tễu, the comedic host. Tễu is a storyteller who will lead
you through different scenes and stories as they start on stage. The puppets often act out the
stories of daily life in Vietnam including duck herding, fishing, rice planting and boat racing.
Some shows are about Vietnamese folktales and legends.
