Objective
- Understand and remark the negative effects on
the environment consequent from the
Industrial Revolution.
- Be able to understand the impact of the
Industrial Revolution in our current world.
Driving Question:
How are we trying to revert the
negative effects that impacted the
environment since the
industrialization?
How it began...
As industrialization expanded, pollution grew as
well. Steam boats, steam trains, and factories
generated more waste than there was before.
How it expanded..
Entrepreneurs wanted to grow. To accomplish
this, they seeked for new markets, land, and
people looking for work. As cities grew, the
landmarks began to expand to the countryside.
New inventions = more pollution
Many of the largest polluters come from the
chemical, pesticide, oil refining, petrochemical,
metal smelting, iron and steel, and food
processing industries. Production rate increased
due to improvements in invention. But this has
the negative impact of more pollutants being
disposed into the environment.
The full impact of the Industrial Revolution would not begin to
be realized until about 100 years later in the 1800s.
The environment was affected in many aspects:
-climate
-ozone layer
- global warming
-wildlife
-pollution
-people’s health problems
First impacts on the environment
Climate behaviors
Natural control of atmospheric CO2 ended at the time of the Industrial Revolution,
when humans began burning fossil carbon fuels, manufacturing cement, and removing
forests at an increasing rate.
- The use of coal as energy source released most of CO2.
- From the late 1700’s to the year 1896, carbon dioxide had increased 30%.
- Poisonous emissions = eliminating source of oxygen
- Starts global warming
- Greenhouse effect
Global warming
- It’s defined as the rise of global temperature
due to greenhouse gases.
- This causes a rise in sea levels and a change
in the amount of pattern of precipitation.
Carbon dioxide also escapes to the atmosphere
during the process of cement manufacture and of
deforestation.
Ozone Layer:
The ozone layer protects the earth from the suns UV Rays. Ozone
layer depletion, is simply the wearing out (reduction) of the
amount of ozone in the stratosphere.
There is a hole in the ozone layer created by chemical processes.
Most aerosols also damage the
ozone layer
Pollution...
Water pollution: We are running out of water.
There is so much dirty water out there that there
is no way it can be cleaned. Oceans are full of
trash, there is even a spot in the ocean, bigger
than the size of Texas, full of trash.
Air pollution: The ozone layer is getting
destroyed.
People’s health problems:
These effects have contributed to people’s health problems and
obesity.
-Obesity = chemicals in food (artificial)
- breathing not clean air leads to lung damage.
Awareness begins….
People began to see how bad this was getting.
The ozone layer was getting destroyed.
Water problems were occurring in many places.
Climate change was affecting in a big way.
When all of this was noticed, awareness began.
Campaigns:
Private companies and
political parties have a lot of
campaigns showing their
concern about this topic. It is
so important right now, that
helping the environment is
helpful for your image.
Perspective change
A huge change has occurred. It went from not
caring at all, to being a huge worry.
Little kids are the most aware of this.
Now wasting water, throwing trash on the street,
cutting of trees and many other things are seen as
such a bad thing.
RRR...
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
These three “R’s” have become
such a big thing during the last
years. People try to follow this
three simple things to help the
environment
Water saving
- Turning off the shower when
applying shampoo.
- use a bucket and not a hose to
clean the car.
- use dirty water to water the
plants.
Regulations
- Permits to cut off trees.
- Not allowing older cars
(which pollute more) to be
around all days.
- Special places to build
factories.
Inventions -Electric Cars
Electric cars, that work
by charging them with
electricity do not use
gasoline anymore, which
makes these friendlier
with the environment.
Ecologic Urinals
This urinals have a special
system in which the urine goes
without the need of water
every single time. Millions of
liters of water are saved every
year because of this.
Windmills + Solar Panels
Windmills and Solar
Panels are two innovative
ways of producing
electricity.
They do not create any
waste that damages the
environment, such as
burning coal.
Today….
As of today, all big cities
are extremely polluted.
But it is also big cities
that are making the
bigger changes to
become greener and
friendlier with the
environment.
These are two examples of today’s
awareness, reflecting the need that
people have, to revert the damage
created in the Industrial Revolution:
Example 1
Steam boats and steam trains.
Both of those inventions, that at the time were so
amazing, they were also so harmful to the
environment; those were two main
transportations methods.
Now, cars are a main transportation method, and
electric cars are being created to revert the harm
made in the past.
This means that new transportation
methods are being invented based on
environmental awareness with the intention of
stopping the harm towards it.
Example 2
When industrialization began, Europe went to
Africa and they exploited the continent
completely, stealing their natural resources.
Right now, natural resources are not that vast in
most places, so really special permits are needed
in order to do so.
Through people’s awareness about non-
renewable resources, actions are being taken to
stop the exploitation of them.
Results
All of the campaigns, big companies, and
governments, have made huge impacts in people.
Everyone is now more careful and people are
creating new, and environmentally friendlier
products.
Conclusion:
Industrialization was such a breaking point in
history. Many inventions were made, and many
things were created. Because of all of this,
industrialization is often seen as an amazing
point in history.
But...
There are also bad things. People did not care
about long term problems, they were so focused
in the present and short term results. Almost 300
years later, we are trying to revert something that
is impossible to do.
