A: Plan of the Investigation
The focus of the study is on how the Maginot Line responsible for the downfall of France in the prosecution of the Second World War. I chose this topic to further understand France’s defeat in WWII, because its defeat was rapid and significant in the prosecution of the war. Also, I desired to learn more about the strength of the Maginot Line and its defense.
The scope of this study is from the year 1929-1944. The study centers on the reasons for the creation of the Maginot Line, and the confidence it gave to France considering its defense against Germany. I will assess the effectiveness of the Maginot Line, and weigh the positive aspects of the Maginot Line against the negative sides.
I will research on this subject through websites on the internet. I will use several secondary sources, mainly books, to see how historians perceived this incident. I will also gather information by studying my history textbook, and through other scholarly sources. Primary and secondary sources were consulted. These will later be discussed in Criterion C.
(word count: 177)
B: Summary of Evidence
The Maginot Line was a series of heavily defended fortifications that ran north from the Swiss border, along the western banks of the Rhine River to southernmost Belgium. 1
It was mounted with artillery and troops 2
The Maginot Line was a modern fortification designed for ground defense 3
,[object Object]
The line of mini forts, containing artillery and/or machine guns, was linked by tunnels with living quarters for the regiments of soldiers manning the forts 5
