User Study of the SADIe Transcoding EngineDarren Lunn
The World Wide Web (Web) is a visually complex, dynamic, multimedia system that can be inaccessible to people with visual impairments. SADIe addresses this problem by using Semantic Web technologies to explicate implicit visual structures through a combination of an upper and lower ontology. This is then used to apply transcoding to a range of Websites. This paper describes a user evaluation that was performed using the SADIe system. Four users were presented with a series of Web pages, some having been adapted using SADIe's transcoding functionality and others retaining in their original state. The results of the evaluation showed that providing answers to a fact based question could be achieved more quickly when the information on the page was exposed via SADIe's transcoding. The data obtained during the experiment was analysed and shown to be statistically significant. This suggests that the transcoding techniques offered by SADIe can assist visually impaired users accessing content on the Web.
Do you hesitate to assign written, spoken, or visual work because you are uncertain how to evaluate and assess student projects? This workshop will demonstrate strategies for formative evaluation (giving feedback on drafts or practice sessions when students are still shaping their projects) and summative evaluation (grading final projects). You'll get tips how to set priorities for feedback, to respond to errors in usage and mechanics, to involve peers in the feedback, to praise good work, and to design and using rubrics to make responding quicker and more reliable.
Prototype Version 1:
Tasks for interviewees
Task #1
Try to get in contact with a research project of your degree
Task #2
Find a FAQ/forum where other students have asked questions
Task #3
Find research project associated with a certain professor
Study Protocol
- Introduction to project
- (Undergraduate Research Projects)
- (Help support undergraduates in finding relevant research opportunities)
- Provide instructions
- Administer relevant demographics to determine interviewee attributes
- Ask if we can record
- Ask them to speak their thoughts out loud
- Show them the paper prototype they are going to interact on
- Ask them to try perform task 1
- Don't provide help
- Ask what they are expected/looking for
- Tell them to say when they have ‘ended/finished’ and found what they are
looking for
- Repeat for task 2 and 3
- Ask questions depending on their past actions (if relevant)
- Administer. UX questionnaires
Quantitative (Scale of 1 to 5 if applicable)
- I found the system unnecessarily complex
- I thought the system was easy to use
- I felt confident about using the system
- I did not feel stressed or lost while navigating the interface
- # of errors doing all the task
Qualitative (descriptive)
- Thoughts on the process
- Did anything feel unnecessary but helpful?
- Did you feel as if you reached your goal too quickly
- Did you feel as if you required some technical background
- Ask follow up interview questions if their answers warrant it
- Wrap up
- Ask if they have any questions they want to ask
- Give group code
Executive Summary
Topic
Our topic for this research project is Undergraduate Research Opportunities.
Top Three Design Goals
Our top three design goals were centered around making sure that the website had relevant
links, as many of the links on the website currently lead to dead pages. Additionally, making the
primary reason that most users are on the website for the main focus of the website was
another design goal. Currently, the website feels as though it does not center itself specifically
around research opportunities for undergraduate students, as it requires the user to navigate
through the website for a bit before being able to find this. Finally, our third most important
design goal was making sure that the user was aware of where they were at any given time.
Currently the user can easily get lost trying to find specific information, being unaware as to
whether or not they are on the right track.
Discoveries during research
1. Dead links riddle the website, making it irrelevant as a source for finding many of the
information it claims to provide
2. The website itself does not feel like a branch from the school's original website. It does
not aesthetically look pleasing nor fitting
3. The website could be minimized a lot and focus primarily on research opportunities and
other things second
4. Many of the p ...

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Heuristic Evaluation of newschool.edu

Designing for Usability
Fall 2010
Prepared by Obinna Izeogu and Ryan Hines
2. Heuristic evaluation / introduction
We evaluated the New School’s website from the point of view of three types of users
– current students, prospective students and staff – and based our analysis on the
following usability categories:
Aesthetic and Minimalist Design Navigation
Help and Documentation Control
Consistency and standards Use Simple and natural language
Provide Feedback Error Prevention
Minimize User’s Memory Load
After reviewing the site independently, we found that many of the issues identified
were the same for both evaluators. These issues are:
1. Link behavior not well-defined
2. Inconsistent navigation across sites
3. Name and breadcrumb information inconsistent
4. “Back” often fails to work as expected
5. Inconsistent header, h1 and link naming
6. Search function is not dependable
7. No clear exit points on many deep links
8. Too much presented on screen, discouraging getting the specific information the
user needs
9. System oriented words used. Words not based on task user is trying to accomplish
10. Unnecessary use of Flash
We then assigned each set of issues a “rating” number based on criticality and ease of
correction.

0 problem.
Superficial usability problem: may be easily overcome by
1 user or occurs extremely infrequently.
Minor usability problem: may occur more frequently or be
2 more difficult to overcome. Fixing this should be given low
priority for next release.
Major usability problem: occurs frequently and persistently
3 or users may be unable or unaware of how to fix the
problem. Important to fix, so should be given high priority.
Usability catastrophe: Seriously impairs use of product and
4 cannot be overcome by users. Imperative to fix this before
product can be released.
