3. Major Mariappan Saravanan
• Born - August 10, 1972
• Died - May 29, 1999 (aged 26)
• Award –Vir Chakra (posthumously)
• Regiment- Bihar Regiment
• Operation-To capture a well-fortified Pakistani position at pt. 4268 In
the Batalik sector
• Major Sarvanan was possibly the first officer killed in the Kargil War.
The attack led by him came in the early stages of the conflict when
adequate information was not available.
• His actions led to him be referred as the "Hero of Batalik".
• He and his men launched an attack at 04:00 IST Saravanan fired a
rocket launcher into the enemy position that killed two enemy
soldiers ,he was hit by sharpel and injured but continued fighting
• He killed two more invaders but he was hit by a bullet in the head
and at around 06:30 IST, he died.
4. Captain Saurabh Kalia
• Born -29 June 1976 Amritsar, Punjab
• Died -9 June 1999 (aged 22)
• Regiment - the 4 JAT Regiment (Infantry)
• He was the first Indian army officer to observe and reported large-
scale intrusion of Pakistani Army and foreign mercenaries in Indian
side of the Line Of Control at Kargil.
• On 15 May 1999 Saurabh Kalia along with five soldiers – Sepoys Arjun
Ram, Bhanwar Lal Bagaria, Bhika Ram, Moola Ram and Naresh
Singh of the 4 Jat Regiment had gone for a routine patrol of the
Bajrang Post in the Kaksar sector
• After a continuous cross fire with Pakistan armed forces from across
the LoC, he and his troops ran out of ammunition. They were finally
encircled by a platoon of Pakistan rangers and captured alive
• Captain Kalia and his men were in captivity for over twenty-two (15
May 1999 – 7 June 1999) days and subjected to torture
5. Subhedar Yogendra Singh Yadav
• Born - May 10, 1980 UP
• Award – Param Vir Chakra
• Regiment -18 Grenadiers
• Operation- to capture three strategic bunkers on Tiger Hill in the
early morning hours of 4 July 1999 The bunkers were situated at
the top of a vertical, snow-covered, 16,500 foot high cliff face.
• Halfway up, an enemy bunker opened up machine gun and
rocket fire in which he got hit by three bullets in his groin and
shoulder, Yadav climbed the remaining 60 feet and reached the
top.
• He crawled to the first bunker and lobbed a grenade, killing four
Pakistani soldiers and neutralizing enemy fire.
• Yadav then charged the second bunker along with two of his
fellow soldiers and engaged in hand-to-hand combat, killing four
Pakistani soldiers. The platoon subsequently succeeded in
capturing Tiger Hill
6. Captain Vikram Batra
• Born- 9 September 1974 Palampur Himachal Pradesh
• Died- 7 July 1999 (aged 24)
• Award – Param Vir Chakra (posthumously)
• Regiment - 13 JAK Rifles
• Operation:- To recapture the first peak of utmost importance - Point
5140
• He decided to lead the rear, as an element of surprise would help
stupefy the enemy. He and his men ascended the sheer rock-cliff, but
as the group neared the top, the enemy pinned them on the face of
the bare cliff with machine gun fire.
• He single-handedly killed three enemy soldiers in close combat.
• captured Point 5140 at 3:30 a.m. on 20 June 1999
• In a mission to rescue an injured officer during an enemy
counterattack against Point 4875. During the rescue attempt, he
pushed aside his Subedar, saying "Tu baal-bacchedar hain, hat ja
peeche. and was killed in action while clearing enemy positions
7. Captain Anuj Nayyar
• Born -August 28, 1975 Delhi
• Died -July 7, 1999 (aged 24)
• Award – Maha Vir Chakra
• Regiment - 17th Battalion Jat Regiment
• His first major operation involved securing Pt. 4875, also known
as Pimple II, a strategic mountain peak on the western side of Tiger
Hill which was occupied by Pakistani infiltrators.
• Nayyar's company, which consisted of 7 personnel, located 4 enemy
bunkers.
• During the battle, Nayyar killed 9 Pakistani soldiers and destroyed
three medium machine gun bunkers.
• None of the soldiers from Nayyar's team of the Charlie Company
survived the battle.
8. Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey,
• Born- 25 June 1975 Sitapur, UP
• Died- 3 July 1999 (aged 24)
• Award – Param Vir Chakra (posthumously)
• Regiment- 1/11 Gorkha Rifles
• Operation- Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey took part in a series of
boldly led attacks during Operation Vijay ; forcing back the
intruders with heavy losses in Battlik including the capture of
Jubbar Top
• In ferocious hand-to-hand combat, he killed two of the enemy
and cleared the first bunker. then destroyed the second
position by killing two more enemies
• he continued to lead the assault on the fourth position urging
his men and destroyed the same with a grenade, cleared the
forth bunker
