This document defines and classifies unilateral spatial neglect. It is characterized by a failure to report or orient towards stimuli on the side of the body opposite a brain lesion. Neglect can be sensory or motor, and personal, peripersonal, or extrapersonal. It is also allocentric, where the left side of an object is neglected, or egocentric, where the exact midline is. The left hemisphere modulates attention to the right side, while the right modulates both, so right hemisphere strokes more commonly cause neglect due to less compensation.
