Part 2
Hell
Dante, writing in The Divine
Comedy described hell as:
A place under the earth’s surface
with 9 levels of suffering where
sinners were bitten by snakes,
tormented by beasts, showered
with icy rain, and trapped in
rivers of blood or flaming tombs
I. Who is Satan?
The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man,
take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and
say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord
says:
“You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom
and perfect in beauty.
You were in Eden, the garden of God; every
precious stone adorned you: carnelian,
chrysolite and emerald, topaz, onyx and jasper,
lapis lazuli, turquois and beryl.
Your settings and mountings were made of gold;
on the day you were created they were prepared.
You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I
ordained you. You were on the holy mount of
God; you walked among the fiery stones; You
were blameless in your ways from the day you
were created till wickedness was found in you.
Through your widespread trade you were filled
with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in
disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled
you, guardian cherub, from among the fiery
stones.
Your heart became proud on account of your
beauty,
and you corrupted your wisdom because of your
splendor. So I threw you to the earth; I made a
spectacle of you before kings.
By your many sins and dishonest trade you have
desecrated your sanctuaries. So I made a fire
come out from you, and it consumed you, and I
reduced you to ashes on the ground in the sight
of all who were watching. All the nations who
knew you are appalled at you; you have come to
a horrible end and will be no more.”
Ezekiel 28:11-19 NIV
Satan’s Downfall
How you have fallen from heaven, morning star,
son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the
earth, you who once laid low the nations!
You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the
heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of
God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of
assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount
Zaphon. I will ascend above the tops of the
clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.”
Isaiah 14:12-14 NIV
II. Hell was created for Satan and his
angels
“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart
from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire
prepared for the devil and his angels.
Matthew 25:41 NIV
III. What happens to unbelievers when they
die?
Sheol/Hades
Gehenna/Lake of Fire
“You have heard that it was said to the people
long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone
who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I
tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother
or sister will be subject to judgment. Again,
anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’
is answerable to the court. And anyone who
says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of
hell (Gehenna).
Matthew 5:21-22 NIV
But the beast was captured, and with it the
false prophet who had performed the signs on
its behalf. With these signs he had deluded
those who had received the mark of the beast
and worshiped its image. The two of them were
thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning
sulfur.
Revelation 19:20 NIV
Then I saw a great white throne and him who was
seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from
his presence, and there was no place for them.
And I saw the dead, great and small, standing
before the throne, and books were opened.
Another book was opened, which is the book of
life. The dead were judged according to what
they had done as recorded in the books.
The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and
death and Hades gave up the dead that were in
them, and each person was judged according to
what they had done. Then death and Hades were
thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the
second death. Anyone whose name was not
found written in the book of life was thrown into
the lake of fire.
Revelation 20:11-15 NIV
Great White Throne Judgment
4 Things Happen
1. Unbelievers from Hades appear before
Jesus to be judged
2. Unbelievers judged according to what
they have done (as recorded in the books)
3. Death and Hades thrown into Lake of Fire
4. Unbelievers thrown into Lake of Fire
IV. What is hell like?
There was a rich man who was dressed in
purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every
day. At his gate was laid a beggar named
Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat
what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the
dogs came and liked his sores.
The time came when the beggar died and
the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The
rich man also died and was buried. In Hades,
where he was in torment, he looked up and saw
Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So
he called to him, “Father Abraham, have pity on
me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger
in water and cool my tongue, because I am in
agony in this fire.”
But Abraham replied, “Son, remember that
in your lifetime you received your good things,
while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is
comforted here and you are in agony. And
besides all this, between us and you a great
chasm has been set in place, so that those who
want to go from here to you cannot, nor can
anyone cross over from there to us.”
He answered, “Then I beg you, father, send
Lazarus to my family, for I have five brothers. Let
him warn them, so that they will not also come to
this place of torment.”
Abraham replied, “They have Moses and
the Prophets; let them listen to them.”
“No, father Abraham,” he said, “but if
someone from the dead goes to them, they will
repent.”
He said to him, “If they do not listen to
Moses and the Prophets, they will not be
convinced even if someone rises from the dead.”
Luke 16:19-31 NIV
A. Hell is a literal PLACE
B. Hell is a place of TORMENT
“Father Abraham, have pity on me and send
Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and
cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this
fire.”
Luke 19:24 NIV
‘…I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family,
for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so
that they will not also come to this place of
torment.’
Luke 19:28 NIV
B. Hell is a place unquenchable FIRE
…I am in agony in this fire.”
Luke 19:24 NIV
The Son of Man will send out his angels, and
they will weed out of his kingdom everything
that causes sin and all who do evil. They will
throw them into the blazing furnace, where
there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 13:41-42 NIV
If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it
off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than
with two hands to go into hell, where the fire
never goes out. And if your foot causes you to
stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life
crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into
hell.
And if your eye causes you to stumble,
pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the
kingdom of God with one eye than to have two
eyes and be thrown into hell, where “the worms
that eat them do not die, and the fire is not
quenched.”
Mark 9:43-48 NIV
D. Hell is a place of SEPARATION from
God
He will punish those who do not know God and
do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They
will be punished with everlasting destruction
and shut out from the presence of the Lord and
from the glory of his might.
2 Thessalonians 1:9 NIV
E. Hell is a place of WEEPING, gnashing of
teeth and DARKNESS
As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the
fire, so it will be at the end of the age. The Son
of Man will send out his angels, and they will
weed out of his kingdom everything that
causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw
them into the blazing furnace, where there will
be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 13:40-42 NIV
E. Hell is a place of WEEPING, gnashing of
teeth and DARKNESS
… thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be
weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 12:12 NIV
“Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and
foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where
there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
Matthew 22:13 NIV
And throw that worthless servant outside, into the
darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of
teeth.
Matthew 25:30 NIV
F. Hell is a place of raging THIRST
“Father Abraham, have pity on me and send
Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water
and cool my tongue, because I am in agony
in this fire.”
Luke 19:24 NIV
G. In hell, people will be ALIVE and AWAKE
And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have
mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the
end of his finger in water and cool my tongue,
for I am in anguish in this flame.’
Luke 16:24 NIV
H. In hell, people will have a MEMORY
I. People in hell WON’T want anyone else to
GO there
… “Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my
family, for I have five brothers. Let him warn
them, so that they will not also come to this
place of torment.”
Luke 16:27-28 NIV
J. People in hell can NEVER LEAVE
And besides all this, between us and you a
great chasm has been set in place, so that
those who want to go from here to you cannot,
nor can anyone cross over from there to us.
Luke 16:26 NIV
