The heart is a fist-sized organ located in the chest that pumps blood throughout the body via the circulatory system. It contains four chambers - two upper atria and two lower ventricles - made of muscle tissue powered by electrical impulses. The heart pumps oxygenated blood received from the lungs to all parts of the body and returns deoxygenated blood back to the lungs to be re-oxygenated. Key functions of the heart include pumping oxygen and nutrients to the body and removing carbon dioxide and waste. Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart while veins return blood to the heart from other tissues and organs.
