Antibiotic Stewardship by Anushri Srivastava.pptxAnushriSrivastav
Stewardship is the act of taking good care of something.
Antimicrobial stewardship is a coordinated program that promotes the appropriate use of antimicrobials (including antibiotics), improves patient outcomes, reduces microbial resistance, and decreases the spread of infections caused by multidrug-resistant organisms.
WHO launched the Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System (GLASS) in 2015 to fill knowledge gaps and inform strategies at all levels.
ACCORDING TO apic.org,
Antimicrobial stewardship is a coordinated program that promotes the appropriate use of antimicrobials (including antibiotics), improves patient outcomes, reduces microbial resistance, and decreases the spread of infections caused by multidrug-resistant organisms.
ACCORDING TO pewtrusts.org,
Antibiotic stewardship refers to efforts in doctors’ offices, hospitals, long term care facilities, and other health care settings to ensure that antibiotics are used only when necessary and appropriate
According to WHO,
Antimicrobial stewardship is a systematic approach to educate and support health care professionals to follow evidence-based guidelines for prescribing and administering antimicrobials
In 1996, John McGowan and Dale Gerding first applied the term antimicrobial stewardship, where they suggested a causal association between antimicrobial agent use and resistance. They also focused on the urgency of large-scale controlled trials of antimicrobial-use regulation employing sophisticated epidemiologic methods, molecular typing, and precise resistance mechanism analysis.
Antimicrobial Stewardship(AMS) refers to the optimal selection, dosing, and duration of antimicrobial treatment resulting in the best clinical outcome with minimal side effects to the patients and minimal impact on subsequent resistance.
According to the 2019 report, in the US, more than 2.8 million antibiotic-resistant infections occur each year, and more than 35000 people die. In addition to this, it also mentioned that 223,900 cases of Clostridoides difficile occurred in 2017, of which 12800 people died. The report did not include viruses or parasites

Hypertension is a chronic condition of concern due to its role in the causation of coronary heart diseases. Hypertension is a worldwide epidemic and important risk factor for coronary artery disease, stroke and renal diseases. Blood pressure is the force exerted by the blood against the walls of the blood vessels and is sufficient to maintain tissue perfusion during activity and rest. Hypertension is sustained elevation of BP. In adults, HTN exists when systolic blood pressure is equal to or greater than 140mmHg or diastolic BP is equal to or greater than 90mmHg. The

The Healthy Ageing and Prevention Index is an online tool created by ILC that ranks countries on six metrics including, life span, health span, work span, income, environmental performance, and happiness. The Index helps us understand how well countries have adapted to longevity and inform decision makers on what must be done to maximise the economic benefits that comes with living well for longer.
Alongside the 77th World Health Assembly in Geneva on 28 May 2024, we launched the second version of our Index, allowing us to track progress and give new insights into what needs to be done to keep populations healthier for longer.

❑ THE WORLD’S, AND THE WORLD HEART FEDERATION’S, BIGGEST
AWARENESS-RAISING PLATFORM FOR CVD. World Heart Day is celebrated
every year on 29 September.
❑ In May 2012, world leaders committed to reducing global mortality from non-
communicable diseases (NCDs) by 25% by 2025. Cardiovascular disease (CVD)
is accountable for nearly half of all NCD deaths making it the world’s number
one killer. World Heart Day is, therefore, the perfect platform for the CVD
community to unite in the fight against CVD and reduce the global disease
burden.
❑ HEART DISEASE AND STROKE, IS THE WORLD’S LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH
CLAIMING 18.6 MILLION LIVES EACH YEAR.

5. World Anesthesia Day
❑ World Anesthesia Day, also known in some countries as National Anesthesia
Day or Ether Day, is an annual event celebrated around the world on 16 October
to commemorate the first successful demonstration of diethyl ether anesthesia
on 16 October 1846.
❑ This ranks as one of the most significant events in the history of medicine and
took place in an operating theater (now known as the Ether Dome) at the
Massachusetts General Hospital, home of the Harvard School of Medicine. The
discovery changed surgery forever, making it possible for patients to obtain the
benefits of surgical treatment without the pain associated with an operation.
❑ Special events have been held to commemorate the date since at least 1903.
The World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists (WFSA) celebrates World
Anesthesia Day annually with over 134 societies representing anesthesiologists
from over 150 countries taking part.
5
6. World Anesthesia Day
❑ Despite nearly 170 years having passed since that first anesthetic procedure and
the countless breakthroughs that have succeeded it, nearly 5 billion people
continue to lack access to safe anesthesia practices.
❑ In the light of this on-going neglect, global awareness days like World
Anesthesia Day can be a powerful advocacy tool to mobilize political will,
educate the general public and inforce achievements of the global anesthesia
community.
❑ Each year for World Anesthesia Day, WFSA focus on a different aspect of
anesthesia care. This helps us to explain the varied, diverse and critical roles that
anesthesiologists play in patient wellbeing.

8. World Stroke Day
❑ When somebody has a stroke, every second that goes by is crucial. As brain
tissue and millions of neurons begin to fade away, time could not be more
precious. Our #Precioustime campaign aims to raise awareness of stroke signs
and the benefits of timely access to emergency medical care.
❑ World Stroke Day takes place on Oct 29th every year. The global awareness day
was established by WSO and provides a global platform for the stroke
community to increase awareness and drive action on stroke around the world.
❑ World Stroke Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the serious nature and
high rates of stroke and talk about ways in which we can reduce the burden of
stroke through better public awareness of the risk factors and signs of stroke. It
is also an opportunity to advocate for action by decision makers at global,
regional and national levels that are essential to improve stroke prevention,
access to acute treatment and support for survivors and caregivers.
❑ For 2021 and 2022 our campaign will be focused on raising awareness of the
signs of stroke and the need for timely access to quality stroke treatment.

World Trauma Day is observed on October
17 each year with an emphasis on saving
lives and how to properly attend to
emergency cases. The day is structured to
create increased awareness about
trauma and to educate the public on ways
to address traumatic incidents and
deaths. Did you know that traumatic
injuries have caused more deaths to
people below the age of 45 than malaria,
HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis? Furthermore,
over 9% of deaths around the world are
caused by traumatic injuries! World
Trauma Day observations seek to lower
these rates.
