Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

- 3. ASSESSING THE LOCATION • Are structures safe?
- 4. ASSESSING PERSONAL SAFETY • Do you know the environment well? • Are you filming at night? • Are you carrying lots of expensive equipment alone?
- 5. ASSESSING EXTERNAL FACTORS • Are you appropriately dressed for the weather? • Have you got permission to film? • Have you made the public aware?
- 6. ASSESSING FILMING ACTIVITY • Is there a dangerous scene? E.g. fight scene/chase scene
- 7. ASSESSING EQUIPMENT USE • Are there cables in the way, easy to trip on? • If using a knife, is that too sharp? Include a prop knife?
- 8. RISK ASSESSMENT SCENARIO ‘A group of 3 students plan to film a murder scene on the moors at night. None of the group can drive. They need to film a chase scene using handheld tracking and a shot of the killer strangling the victim with a rope. Their final shot composes of the body of the victim in a shallow grave being buried as rain pours down’. What are the risks? • Take more people, at least a couple who can drive • Film in the evening just as its beginning to go dark • Use a dolly so its there is no risk of tripping over or use someone as a guide to run in front • Don’t show the actual murder, maybe show the murderer about to strangle with the rope • Think about the weather – it might not rain – if so wear appropriate clothes • Avoid shallow grave
