Dr. John Sarno treats patients with tension myofascial pain syndrome (TMS) and recommends that they resume physical activity because it will not hurt them. He advises patients to talk to their brain and tell it that they will not tolerate the pain anymore. Dr. Sarno also recommends that patients stop all physical treatments for their back as these may be prolonging their recovery. He stresses the importance of not repressing emotions like anger which can cause back pain, and advises patients to stop thinking of themselves as injured and to not be intimidated by back pain as they have the power to overcome it.
