3. What is Hazardous Waste?
“Hazardous waste means any waste which by
reason of any of its physical, chemical, reactive,
toxic, flammable, explosive or corrosive
characteristics causes danger or is likely to cause
danger to health or environment, whether alone
or when in contact with other wastes or
substances”

4. Identification
• Schedule I : List of Processes generating
Hazardous wastes (38 Processes more than 107
wastes)
• Schedule II: List of Waste Constituents with
Concentration Limits (5 classes A,B,C,D &E)

5. Checklist for Identification
• What is the process that is generating the waste
• Is the flashpoint less than 60o C
• Is the pH less than 2 or greater than 12.5
• Is it Poisonous
• Does the material releases fumes on shaking or when
exposed to air or water

6. Storage
• The Period for Storage of Hazardous waste in 90 days.
• Storage should be separate from work area
• Entry in the storage area must be restricted
• Different wastes should be using Secondary Storages
• NFPA Diamonds may be used for Storage Area

11. Labeling
• Labeling should be done as per As per Guidelines
• The Individual Containers should be labeled using form 8
• The vernacular language also should be used
• Hazard Pictograms also may be used as a warning signal
for non-technical persons

14. Handling
• Only authorized persons should be allowed to handle
• All the handlers must be aware about the Haz waste & the
precautions to be taken
• Use of PPEs should be mandatory
• Proper work permit system should be implemented

• Form 1 Application for authorization
• Form 2 Authorization
• Form 3 record of Hazardous wastes handled by the
generator
• Form 4 Environmental Statement
• From 9 transport emergency card
• From 8 Container Label
• Form 9 Manifest

Form 10 – Manifest System
• The occupier shall prepare six copies of the
manifest in Form 10 comprising of colour code
indicated below and all seven copies shall be
signed by the transporter:

20. Accident Reporting
• Provision given in Rule 22
• Where an accident occurs at the facility of the
occupier handling hazardous or other wastes and
operator of the disposal facility or during
transportation, the occupier or the operator or the
transporter shall immediately intimate the State
Pollution Control through telephone, e-mail about
the accident and subsequently send a report in Form
