The red-billed gull lives along New Zealand's coasts, beaches, lakes and inland waters, eating small fish, plankton, insects, crabs, and human food scraps. It faces threats from predators like dogs, cats, rats, hedgehogs, crabs, octopuses, otters and sea turtles. Humans also negatively impact the species through littering, destroying nests, storm water runoff, and driving vehicles on beaches. The gull has grey and white feathers with a bright red bill, legs and feet, weighs around 300g, and is approximately 37cm from head to tail.
