Earth: Rameses 11th
George was an archaeologist. He
didn’t earn much because he was a
minor archaeologist, unlike Howard
Carter. But he did try hard to earn
enough money for his family. He had
always dreamed of finding a new tomb
of his own, but in Egypt, where he
would dig in the earth with his co-
workers, he had found only small
things like pots and tools. Sometimes
they would dig two metres into the
earth, but other times they would dig
as far ten metres.
One day, he was digging into the earth
at a site near Cairo when suddenly the
tunnel caved in round about him.
Being the only one digging in the
tunnel at the time, he was alone. He
tried to dig up to the surface, or where
he thought the surface might be, but it
was hard to tell under a ton of earth
and sand.
Suddenly he felt something give way
beneath him and he fell even further
down into the earth. Once he regained
consciousness, he looked at his
surroundings. What he saw was very
unusual – walls with lots of little
drawings on them which he knew to be
hieroglyphs, and a massive lump of
stone that looked like a kind of door.
George knew instantly this was what
he’d always been looking for: an
Egyptian tomb, like the ones he’d been
studying all his life. He had dreamed
of finding a new one that would bring
him fame as Tutankhamen’s did for
Howard Carter.
He hoped that this was a new tomb,
not just a different entrance to an
already discovered one, but he found
that very unlikely since there was not a
known tomb within a ten mile radius.
He walked over to the hieroglyphs and
worked to decipher them: “Rest in
Peace, Rameses the Eleventh”.
George knew he was lucky when he
read this, because he had never heard
of a Rameses the Eleventh! All he
needed was to get out of here and tell
the world.
He did get rescued eventually by his
team and he told them to dig down and
find that tomb. When it was eventually
uncovered, what he found inside was
great: lots of golden artefacts, such as
sarcophagi, even boats and games.
His lifelong goal was achieved: George
was now famous across the earth!
