by combining the accuracy of the Breguet balance-spring’s terminal

18. EDITOR’S LETTER
In the summertime, when the weather is high... you can stretch right
out on the sun deck with an ice-cold cocktail and a good magazine. The July/August edition of Harrods
Magazine is an unmissable holiday read, bringing together the key trends of the upcoming season from
the world of fashion, as well as fragrance, food and furniture.
Autumn starts with a wardrobe rethink. Perhaps in response to last season’s flashy ’80s aesthetic,
this season sees a revival of ’90s grunge in womenswear (p62) – albeit with a far more glamorous edge.
Layering up a patchwork of textures and fabrics in the great grunge tradition, autumn’s most relaxed
trend mixes prints with gothic shapes, subtle military references with a strong shoulder. Sophisticates,
on the other hand, will enjoy the Mad Men influence that has inspired a strict yet demure silhouette,
as well as a new love affair with lace. For a full breakdown of the major new-season looks, see our
Autumn/Winter 2010 preview by Jess Cartner-Morley (p56).
On the other side of the gender divide, menswear cleverly combines dressing up with dressing down
(p72). The trend for formal tailoring, begun by the likes of Thom Browne, has made new ground this
season as suiting is paired with T-shirting, turned-up jeans and hard-as-nails boots. Military details also
feature in shearling flying jackets and swinging khaki officer coats; knitwear becomes less slouchy and
more structured; and a tartan army of plaids and checks takes over all manner of casual separates.
Elsewhere in the issue, find the latest looks in tabletop dressing (p95), delicious recipes using Aberdeen
Angus beef, and the best indulgent adventures around the world (p103).

“Men are less forgiving when it comes to fit than women. It’s very important to get the tailoring
right…it’s about subtleties, the unusual details on a familiar style.” The AW10 collection is based
on utilitarian outdoorwear, and is given an urban polish with a sleek cut and luxe fabrics. The coats
are the stars of the collection. Lim’s favourite piece is the motorcycle leather jacket. “I have one

be. I would say he is the kindred spirit of the 3.1 Phillip Lim girl – cool, easy, chic.”

YEARS IN THE
(WATCH)MAKING
Standing the test of time takes on a whole
new meaning as Baume Mercier dips
into the archive for its latest collection
Since 1830, Baume
Mercier has distinguished
itself with the incredible
innovation of its watches
– a legacy that today
arms the brand with 180
years’ expertise.
In the 1890s, the mark of true horological
excellence was to win the world’s most
famous chronometry competition, held at
the Kew Observatory. It was a competition
at which the Baume Maison was repeatedly
successful, winning the Absolute Precision
Record for its keyless chronometer with
tourbillon escapement in 1892.
Paying tribute to this heritage, Baume
Mercier is revisiting the complications
of its past by launching the William Baume
Collection. Each timepiece has been
singled out for its own special connection
to the brand’s history. The Single
Push-Piece Chronograph is inspired by a
function first established in 1938, and uses
a single pusher to start, stop and reset
short times. The 6.2mm Ultra Thin reflects
Baume Mercier’s ongoing dedication to
creating sensationally slim and elegant
timepieces. And the new Retrograde Second
(left) has a retrograde function that counts
off 30-second intervals across a graduated
arc of a circle before jumping backwards
to its starting point. Today Baume
Mercier is held in as high regard as ever.
