Hannah Lux Davis is a female music video director who has worked with many popular artists like Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, and Miley Cyrus. She studied at film schools in New York and Los Angeles and started her career as a makeup artist before transitioning to directing. Davis has directed almost 50 music videos and is recognized for developing a signature style using bright colors and themes of female empowerment, though she has also been criticized for sometimes objectifying women. As one of the few female directors in the industry, she is considered an auteur for establishing a recognizable personal style across many of her projects.

Hannah Lux Davis was enrolled at the New York
Film Academy and then the Los Angeles Film
School one year later. All her final projects were
music videos and she chose to pursue a career
in this area. She started work as a makeup artist
after also attending Cinema Makeup School is

would feel when she got there.
Hannah is one of a few female music video directors
and directors on a whole; female directors are
estimated to take up 7% of the profession. She has
worked with many artists, the most notable being Ariana

Miley Cyrus and Fifth Harmony.
She has made almost fifty music videos on a whole.
Davis has said, that when she directed Lil Wayne’s
“Love me,” which featured Drake, the music video was
the first to put her in a position where people were
asking who she was. She has also stated that he
inspiration for most her work is visual, she draws a lot of
photos to help insure the look she hopes to create when
it comes to making a music video.

An auteur is a director of film who style is distinctive and recognisable; to be classed an auteur, the director must have
worked on more than one project and the project they create should have a personal style and have creative control over
their work. The directors of music videos can also be viewed as auteur’s due to the fact that they are in control of the
creation of the final products and have the final say over mise-en-scene. Davis has now created a style in all her videos
that mean she can be recognised by people, as she is known for using bright, vibrant colours such as yellow and
pink that often give the videos sexual undertones; many of her videos also involve same sex couples, commonly
of the female gender, but videos with opposite sex couples seem to be presented as toxic and bad. Most of the
videos are focused on “female power,” however, she seems to sexualise women as objects in many of her videos.
