As a way of illustrating this Dr Alexandre Christoyannopoulos explored with us “Christian Anarchism” because it highlights many of these points.
Talk of religion and politics tends to conjure up images and memories of religious intolerance and political violence, especially if the word 'radical' is added in. Yet many religious radicals are non-violent.
Gandhi, for instance, was a strictly non-violent religious and political radical. What few people know is that his inspiration for this strict non-violence was Christian anarchist Leo Tolstoy.
These slides are associated with a webinar where we discussede nonviolent religious radicalism using Tolstoy and others Christian anarchists as a starting point in order to reflect more broadly on the interaction of religion and politics, on where that leaves the intentions of secularism, and on why nonviolent activism tends to be eclipsed by violent alternatives.

Southern Baptists support capital punishment. Baptist Churches 36 American Baptist Churches oppose since 1982. Methodist Churches 13 In 2000 the UMC declared its opposition. Pentecostal Churches 10 Mixed. The Assemblies of God have no official stance The Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America declared its opposition in 1989. Lutheran Churches 8 The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod declared its support for capital punishment in 1976. Eastern Orthodox Churches 5 Abolitionist. The Qur'an supports the death penalty, but there is a Islam 5 strong tradition of mercy within the faith. No official position; it considers the death penalty to be Latter-Day Saints/Mormons 5 a matter of the state and civil law. All major U.S. Jewish movements either advocate for Judaism 4 the abolition of the death penalty or have called for at least a temporary moratorium on its use. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has opposed the Presbyterian Churches 4 death penalty since 1959. Episcopal Church 2 Opposed to capital punishment since 1968. Reformed Church in America 2 Abolitionist. Jehovah's Witnesses 1.2 No official position. United Church of Christ 1 Abolitionist. Additional information: Generally speaking, liberal religious groups are abolitionist, while conservative faith groups support capital punishment. Exceptions are The Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons) and the Assemblies of God which have not taken an official position. The National Council of the Churches of Christ has opposed capital punishment since 1968. The National Assembly of Evangelicals (NAE) has supported the death penalty since 1972. Many small conservative denominations and independent churches strongly support the death penalty. The Mennonites, Amish, Society of Friends (Quakers), and Unitarian Universalists have historically been among the most active groups in opposition to the death penalty. There is no common position among Buddhists on capital punishment, but many emphasize nonviolence and appreciation for life. As a result, in countries with large Buddhist populations, such as Thailand, capital punishment is rare. Hinduism has no official position on capital punishment; Hindu theologians fall on both sides.
