Lakeshore Habitat for Humanity is launching the public phase of its Blueprint to ReBuild the Lakeshore Campaign to raise the remaining $400,000 of its $1 million goal by June 30th, 2016. The campaign will provide affordable housing and home repairs for 100 families over five years. The organization is holding a golf tournament fundraising event on July 15th at Ravines Golf Club in Saugatuck to support the campaign, with a cost of $125 per golfer.
Dear Friends & Supporters,
Housing is essential to our mission of ending poverty and homelessness among veterans, but the availability of affordable housing in the San Francisco Bay Area is scarce. This scarcity is well-known and has created numerous challenges in trying to end veteran homeless. Over the last six years, we have made tremendous strides and have housed more than 40 percent of all homeless veterans in San Francisco. This reduction has occurred while the city has grappled with a 23 percent overall increase in homelessness.
At any given time, we have the capacity to house 441 veterans. With a new housing site in Mission Bay, we will be able to house another 62 veterans and 56 families. We are proud to announce that we will be breaking ground on our eighth housing site in Mission Bay on November 21st. Most of the veterans who reside with us are seniors who earn less and are typically more disabled than non-veterans of similar age and situation. However, we recognize that veterans with histories of chronic
homelessness have unique needs and require wrap-around care. Under this model, we work to foster a community that is supportive and engaged, providing veterans with access to resources they need to become self-sufficient.
The path to self-sufficiency starts with housing but as you will find out, it does not end there. This path can include mental health or substance abuse counseling, support groups, educational programs, workshops, and engaging in a wide array of community activities. In this issue, we have featured community activities to show our supporters an inside look at our residents’ lives and how these activities are an essential part of their reintegration to society. We have also featured volunteer engagement activities that have helped give us the opportunity to beautify the housing sites where our veterans live.
Swords to Plowshares has operated successful housing programs since 1987 and will continue to work to end poverty and homelessness among veterans. Please join us in our mission to end veteran homelessness by speaking with your local representative voicing your support for more housing for veterans and sharing any news and events about us online to help us generate awareness about our cause.
Thank you,

Dear Change-Maker,
Countless children in Los Angeles lack the family and community support structures required to be healthy and happy. These kids do not have access to typical educational resources and recreational outlets. Instead, they are surrounded by high crime rates and drug use. They struggle to make it safely through the school day, cope with a tumultuous home life, or get enough to eat – let alone receive the necessary guidance, instruction, and interaction.
An alarming 35% of LA School District high school students dropped out last year. More alarming is that it doesn’t have to be this way. The sooner we can provide children with the tools they need to be effective leaders, and the more often we can connect with them, the bigger the difference we can make! Our interaction benefits not only the child, but also the child’s family, friends, community – and thus, our communities, and yours.
Activating our Natural Leaders transforms our World.
As you may be aware, the KVBL Natural Leaders Program provides empowering, hands-on education to children in the Los Angeles area who are otherwise limited in what they see as possible for themselves and their futures. In the last four years, funds donated to the KVBL have been used to provide:
Teamwork and leadership training and exercises.
Emotional growth coaching, affirmation exercises and personal development support.
Basketball training with the Venice Basketball League’s best players and other celebrities.
Yoga, body alignment, and fitness training from certified fitness professionals.
Surfing instruction from world-renowned experts.
Sustainability, environmental and creative arts education and experiences.
Healthy, organic breakfasts and lunches, along with nutrition education.
Your sponsorship provides children with the resources, mentors, and experiences to activate the Natural Leader within each of them. Upon completion of the program, children return to their families and communities, empowered to lead by example and transform their worlds.
Without your support, we cannot continue providing children with this game-changing opportunity. Enclosed you will find more information on available sponsorship opportunities. To support our Natural Leaders or ask any questions, please contact me at your convenience.

Quoting the words of Dr. Seuss, we have many exciting plans for Young Horizons as we move into our new year. In this time of great change and a difficult political climate, we can rest assured on one fact, we will continue to provide the high-quality early care and education to the children in our centers in a caring, loving and learning environment. Although we do not know what changes lie ahead, we will continue to advocate and educate policymakers on the issues that affect families.

Our refreshed Habitat for Humanity
brand was rolled out in February,
and is a simple, strong statement of
who we are and why we exist.
Habitat believes in the idea that no
matter who we are or where we
come from, we all deserve to have
a decent life.We deserve to know
we have the power to take care of
ourselves and build our own futures.
news from our executive director
Lakeshore Habitat is entering the final phase
of our ‘Blueprint to ReBuild the Lakeshore’
campaign. We are grateful for the outpouring
of support that has already been provided! Did
you know that almost half of the families in our
community are spending a disproportionate
amount of their income on housing? This leaves
them with little income to handle items like car
repairs and medical expenses. While jobs are
available; wages have not kept pace with the increase in housing costs.
We realize it will take an enormous effort to respond to this need.We are
one part of the solution and we need your help. I hope you will give serious
consideration to supporting our work in this community.
Thank you and God bless each of you,
Jack

The Eastburn family is eager to have a safe and
stable home environment to raise their children in,
and to have a place where they can invest in the
lives of others and their community. Great progress is
being made on their home.Their home will be the first
Habitat Strong home in Michigan, too!
Habitat Strong homes are designed to help counties
being located in a particular high wind speed zoned
area with protection through a new roofing technology
and materials. This will ensure that the Eastburn
family’s home will be best protected from wind damage
now and in the future.
volunteer spotlight
Jim Polet has been volunteering with Lakeshore Habitat for several
years, consistently 2-3 times a week. His passion for building and
excellent volunteer service record earned him the title of Volunteer of the
Year in 2013, and he was recently honored as the first person to reach
1,000 service hours since 2014!
It is volunteers like Jim that allow us to build affordable homes for low-
income families in Holland. This is what a hero looks like!
We would love your help with our three new builds planned for 2016!
These constructions include homes on Sunnyjune Avenue, Beeline
Road, and Reed Street in Holland. Come serve the community and help
