- WoS JSP: de facto standard for defining quality How did Garfield select for the 1st SCI (1963) before he’d compiled citation data Core literature was know SC Bradford et al knew of the MOST USED literature In 1969 Garfield started to observe citation clustering around the top journals as SCI data accumulated for study. BRADFORD’s LAW OF SCATTERING: 500 to 1000 journals needed to provide 95% of significant literature of a field – SCI=175 CATEGORIES / fields Comet: concentration of significance at the nucleus with journals of occasional significance at the tale. GARFIELD’S LAW OF CONCENTRATION: SIGNIFICAT degree of overlap among different fields. Relatively small number of journals accounted for most of the references indexed, articles published, and citation received. (1972) He determined that the core literature of all scientific disciplines at the time involved no more that 1,000 jouirnals. Garfield’s 1972 SCI covered 3,000 journals –far exceeding the core literature. (core literature definition: nearly 100% of articles are directly concerned with the subject)
