How it started…
GROW is an initiative started by three students of The Cathedral and
John Connon School, namely: Vidit Bhandarkar, Aditi Guha, and
Amaesha Durazi.
The objective of GROW is to help underprivileged children living at the
Remand Home. The Home suffers from a lack of adequate funding.
This prevents the children from having access to some necessities like
clothing, adequate food, clean water etc.
We thus decided to take matters into our own hands and help in any
way we could.

First Task
The number of children at the Remand Home vary from time to time.
When we first met the Warden, a big group of children had been
rescued from a factory where they were victims of child labor. These
children were brought to the Home. This facilitated an immediate need
for uniforms. Arranging these uniforms was our first real task.
We bought the girls undergarments and got new uniforms stitched for
them

Long Term Goal
The Children at the Remand Home are cooped up for most of the day
and they have a lot of unused energy. This generally results in a lot of
fights.
I felt that keeping the children engaged in a sport is the best way for
them to use this energy.
We decided to provide them with a basketball hoop, throw ball and
volleyball nets and carom boards.
After buying the equipment, we went to the Remand Home and set it
up with the help of some of the children.
We have also decided to play these sports with them and teach them
how to sing; another great way of spending time.

Funding
In order to procure funds for the sports equipment and clothing, we
made posters and created a website to raise awareness about our
cause.
The funds came in slowly at first but after a month or so we had
enough to buy the equipment.
Our target audience is mainly the parents of students who are
privileged enough to go to schools like ours.
The school also pitched in and the entire proceeds of this year’s bake
sale (sale of home-made cookies and donuts) have been made
available for the uniforms

Independence Day
We were honored to be invited for the Independence Day celebration
at the Home where we joined the children in singing the national
anthem and watched them hoist the flag.
We then watched skits performed by them.
This was a very pleasant experience and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Future Plans
Our school, The Cathedral and John Connon School, really liked what
we were doing with the Remand Home.
They want to make, ‘cleaning The Remand Home’ an annual Socially
Useful Productive Work (SUPW) project for the 11th and 12th graders.
We immediately jumped at this opportunity and approached the
Warden to get his approval who agreed without any hesitation.
