Group Work: Problem Solving Task


You are asked to move a metal bar from the ground floor to the fourth floor by using
the lift located at Block B in our school.


Calculate the maximum length of the metal bar so that it can be put into the lift.
Solution:




With the notation in the figure,

∵ IG +GB =IB (Pyth. Theorem)

∴ IB = [(1.23-0.2) +0.97 ] m

  IB =2.0018 m


  IB =√2.0018 m


  IB =1.415 m (cor. to 4 sign. fig.)

∵ AI =IB +AB (Pyth. Theorem)

∴ AI =(1.415 +2.21 ) m

  AI =6.886325 m
AI =√6.886325 m


 AI =2.624 m (cor. to 4 sign. fig.)


∴ the maximum length of the metal bar so that it can be put into the lift = 2.624


m
