3. Question (a)
With the aid of examples explain briefly the meaning of the
concepts Ubuntu, ethical leadership and leadership theory
4. Ubuntu
According to Mugumbate (2013), Ubuntu is described as an
African philosophy that places emphasis on ‘being self
through others’
Ubuntu is a Nguni Bantu term meaning “humanity.”
Ubuntu means love, truth, peace, happiness, eternal
optimism, inner goodness et.
It is often translated as “I am because we are,” or
“humanity towards others” but is often used in a more
philosophical sense to mean “the belief in a universal
bond of sharing that connects all humanity”
5. Ubuntu Example
Nelson Mandela once said: “A traveller through a country
would stop at a village and he didn't have to ask for food
or for water. Once he stops, the people give him food,
entertain him.
6. Ethical Leadership
Ethical leadership is defined as leadership demonstrating
and promoting normatively appropriate conduct through
personal actions and interpersonal relations (WGU, 2020)
Ethical leadership is essentially a leadership theory, which
uses ethical concepts as a guide to managing subordinates
(Luenendonk, 2020)
7. Ethical Leadership Example: Howard
Schultz / Starbucks
Starbucks has consistently appeared on the World’s Most
Ethical Companies list by the Ethisphere Institute. Large
part of the company’s ethical approach to making business
was stemmed from its then leader Howard Schultz (1986-
2000), who always put employees’ wellbeing at the heart
of the organization.
Schultz wanted to ensure all employees received access to
healthcare, even if they worked part-time for the
organization.
Schultz has been recognized for understanding that great
customer service starts from happy employees. Through
ethical leadership, was able to inspire employees to serve
8. Leadership Theory
Leadership theories are schools of thought brought
forward to explain how and why certain individuals
become leaders (Corporate Finance Institute, n.d.)
The theories emphasize the traits and behaviors that
individuals can adopt to boost their own leadership
abilities.
Leadership theories include Great Man Theory, Trait
Theory, Contigency Theory, Situational Theory and
Behavioral Theory.
9. Great Man Theory
According to the Great Man Theory, leaders are born with
just the right traits and abilities for leading – charisma,
intellect, confidence, communication skills and social
skills.
10. Question (b)
Examine Five (5) moral leadership qualities that are exuded
by One (1) lecturer who inspires you the most and proceed
to explain briefly the ethical measures that can be used to
instill these moral leadership qualities into the rest of the
lecturers.
Mr Magwagwa
11. Humility
Mr Magwagwa’s greatest gift is humility. He holds several
academic qualifications, a very respectable position in the
school and is liked by almost everyone I know. However
when he addresses the class you would think he’s just a
regular lecturer. He takes the bus like all other students.
In fact he sits next to cleaning staff and guards in the bus.
Sometimes when there’s limited space he stands and lets
elderly cleaning staff have a seat. This helped me with my
learning process in that I feel much more comfortable
because I am communicating with someone who has
lowered themselves to my level just to explain in layman
terms
12. Confidence
To add on, he is a very confident and energetic person. On
Monday morning when everyone is tired from a long
weekend and dragging their feet, Mr Magwagwa is the
opposite. He has this jovial energy and it rubs off on the
rest of the class. No matter how tired you are, you get the
energy to pull through the lecture just from his jokes and
conversation. A cheerful leader is important because that
type of energy is contagious and it is that kick start I
needed as a student to prepare me for the day.
13. Passion
Mr Magwagwa is very passionate about his work. To him
web development is more than just a course or a job, you
would think it’s leisure for him. This helps to give a very
effective teaching style. The lecturer loves this course, so
I become curious what exactly am I supposed to love
about the course. That alone drove me to have a passion
in the course and I managed to pass it with a high grade.
14. Communication
He is also an excellent communicator. He laces his
explanations with jokes, examples and really interesting
experiences. Sometimes this creates a really comfortable
atmosphere around the room. We even forget we are in a
lecture while he takes us on a journey into his past, or
tells us really interesting facts about the school, the
country, the law or even the world. This helps him to get
our attention to the highest degree. So when he’s
explaining an important point, you are rarely left behind.
15. Innovation
Mr Magwagwa is innovative and creative. He uses a very
intelligent approach when solving problems. He is a very
smart man and his methods are very easy to follow
through. This helps us to also open our minds and allow us
to think beyond the box.
16. Ethical Measures that can be used to instill
these qualities into the rest of the lecturers
One of the key qualities of humility is valuing others and
enabling them to be heard. Spending time, listening to
others and drawing out their feelings and values, enabling
them to express themselves, is an impactful way to
understand this.
Praising slight improvements is a way of boosting
someone’s confidence. The goal is instilling a positive
view, so every step taken in this direction matters and a
positive view nurtures confidence, certainty and
commitment.
Having a positive work environment can instill passion into
a workmate. A positive “vibe” in the workplace radiates
energy and makes people enjoy coming to work.
Productivity and motivation are increased at the same
time.
17. Ethical Measures continue…
Giving honest feedback is critical for someone trying to be
a better communicator. Improving areas that may have
been overlooked can be discovered if feedback is given.
Recognition and generous rewards can boost someone’s
innovation or creativity. If you desire an innovation
culture, you must reward and recognize innovative
behavior, including taking risks, even when the results are
not immediately positive.
