The Green Worm Project is aligned with UE Strategy about “Circular
Economy” and “IncreaseValue of waste by recycling and recovery”.
The Circular Economy Package consists of an EU Action Plan for the Circular
Economy that establishes a concrete and ambitious programme of action, with
measures covering the whole cycle : from production and consumption to
waste management and the market for secondary raw materials.
Key elements of the revised waste proposal include moreover :
• A common EU target for recycling 65% of municipal waste by 2030;
• A binding landfill target to reduce landfill to maximum of 10% of municipal
waste by 2030;
• Concrete measures to promote re-use and stimulate industrial symbiosis -
turning one industry's by-product into another industry's raw material;

Punto di partenza importante è la progettazione dei processi di produzione, dei prodotti e dei
servizi: i prodotti possono essere ripensati per essere utilizzati più a lungo, riparati,
ammodernati, rifabbricati o, alla fine, riciclati, invece di essere gettati via; i processi di
produzione possono essere concepiti tenendo maggiormente conto delle possibilità di
riutilizzo dei prodotti e delle materie prime, nonché della capacità rigenerativa delle risorse
naturali; è possibile introdurre modelli aziendali innovativi che instaurino un nuovo tipo di
relazione tra le imprese e i consumatori.
Il diagramma sottostante illustra il modello di economia circolare schematizzandone le fasi
principali, ciascuna delle quali offre opportunità in termini di taglio dei costi, minore
dipendenza dalle risorse naturali, impulso a crescita e occupazione, nonché contenimento dei
rifiuti e delle emissioni dannose per l’ambiente. Le fasi sono interdipendenti, in quanto le
materie possono essere utilizzate a cascata: ad esempio, le imprese si scambiano i
sottoprodotti, i prodotti sono rimessi a nuovo o rifabbricati, oppure i consumatori optano per
sistemi prodotti-servizi. Per garantire il funzionamento ottimale del sistema occorre evitare
per quanto possibile che le risorse escano dal circolo.

GWP involves the disposal of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste
produced by the Malta residents with a completely natural system and
environment friendly.
The project includes the local administration, the waste service company and
population in order to raise the awareness of the principles of "circular economy"
in three steps :
1° step : Faisibility Study and “Test Phase” to concept the plant or multi-plants and
define the best mix to feed the worms;
2° step : Experimental Plant : small plant to start worm farming and train staff

The Californian red earthworm (Lumbricus rubellus) is one of the 8,000 species
of earthworms existing on earth.
It is the species most used for the breeding and producing worm compost, thanks
to its high ability to reproduce and to its short mobility characteristics.
It is dark red, measuring from 6 to 8 cm in length, and from 3 to 5 mm in
diameter.

Lario (Lecco, Italy), has its own farms for a total of 30,000 square meters and
