1. GRAVITY – MOVIE REVIEW
STORYLINE:A nerve-wracking tale of two astronauts left afloat in space
after their mission goes bust.
CAST:George Clooney, Sandra Bullock
“In the end, it’s not going to matter how many breaths you took but how
many moments took your breath away.”
Directed by Oscar nominee Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity promises 90
minutes of such awe-inspiring moments. A science fiction thriller, the
movie has Sandra Bullock playing Dr.Ryan Stone, who is on her maiden
missionto outer space with veteran astronaut Matthew Kowalsky
(George Clooney). The first half opens with three astronauts on their
final spacewalk to service the HubbleSpace Telescope. Disasterstrikes
when missioncontrol from Houston warns them about debris from a
defunctRussian satellite that’s about to cross their trajectory. Stone is
thrown from the shuttle Explorerand is left untethered and unable to
move until Kowalski, who is wearing a jetpack to navigate outside the
shuttle, can come get her. From there, they must attempt to reach the
International Space Station in hopes that it will still be functioning and
able to provide them safe passage back to Earth. The music is a critical
element in the film, piping in not only from the screenbut also from
behind and around you, helping to bewilderand dislocate you when
hurtling debris destroys the telescope ina vast, soundless explosion.
The effectis shocking and terrifying, the first of the movie’s many
triumphs of pure craftsmanship.
More like 127 hours in the silence of outer space, “Gravity” is an
existential rumination on the human instinct to survive. The second half
predominantly alternates betweenthe claustrophobically small-view
inside Stone’s helmet to the vast openness of space. However,
Cuaron's creativity comes alive in the way he uses the eerie calm of
space to heighten tension. It’s slightly dark at places, yet beautiful and
2. poignant. For all its visual wonders — and this is a picture that deserves
to be seenin 3D, on as big of a screenas possible — Gravity is a
spectacular ride, a disposable “wow-did-you-see-that?” entertainment.
Bullock is the film’s secretweapon, anchoring this enormous film with a
sadness and vulnerability she’s never played before. Gravity dazzles and
thrills like no other movie in recent memory, but it also moves you. And
as you leave the theatre; your feet planted firmly on the ground, you will
be so thankful for gravity, the most underappreciated of all natural
forces.Never again will you take it for granted. Watch the movie and
you’ll be surprised how easily it makes you go breathless!
VERDICT:Must watch!
