The Grand National horse race routinely causes serious injury and death to the horses that participate. In the 2007 race, Graphic Approach fell at the notoriously dangerous Becher's Brook fence and ran loose for over a mile before collapsing from his injuries and later being euthanized due to pneumonia. Defenders of the race claim the horses enjoy the challenge, but the race is deliberately punishing and hazardous, featuring large jumps and obstacles that many horses have never encountered before. The modern racing industry breeds horses for speed over skeletal strength, putting them at greater risk of fatal injuries from falls.
