Casino Royale and Franchise
Remix: James Bond as Superhero
Robert P. Arnett
"Who am I? I'm Spider-man." Last line Spider-man (2002)
"The truth i s . . . I am Iron Man." Last line Jron Man (2008)
"TTie name's Bond, James Bond." Last line Casino Royale (2006)
Popular media and industry reporting often claim films like
Casino Royale (Martin Campbell, 2006), Batman Begins (Christopher
Nolan, 2005), The Incredible Hulk (Louis Leterrier, 2008), and
Superman Returns (Bryan Singer, 2006) "reboot" their franchises (e.g.,
Cohen 2008). Invoking shutting down and restarting one's computer
provides an inaccurate metaphor for the multiple functions Casino
Royale performs in its position on the timeline of the Bond franchise.
While beginning the James Bond story again in feature film form,
now starring Daniel Craig, it also acknowledges previous feature film
iterations, Ian Fleming's novels, and its fan base at a level of self-
reference not previously seen in Bond feature films. Casino Royale,
more accurately, "remixes" the Bond franchise. "Remixed media,"
according to Lawrence Lessig, take a "wide range of 'texts,'" or
"quotes," and combine them to produce "the new creative work—the
'remix'" (69). Eduardo Navas further explains a remix can be reñexive,
allegorizing and extending "the aesthetic of [the] sampling, where
the remixed version challenges the aura of the original and claims
autonomy even when it carries the name of the original; material is
added or deleted, but the original tracks are largely left intact to be
recognizable" (1). The producers of Casino Royale have "sampled"
the transmediated mythos of James Bond and created a film remix: a
transformation ofthe franchise that acknowledges previous iterations
while claiming its own autonomy.
As Casino Royale unfolds, it argues for its autonomy. The
film presents a hero recognizable as James Bond and a James Bond
not familiar to many fans. As Navas points out, "The spectacular aura
of the original(s), whether fully recognizable or not, must remain
a vital part if the remix is to find cultural acceptance" (1). Cultural
acceptance of big budget, mainstream film resides in its box office
success—bringing in the mass audience. Tony Bennett and Janet
Woollacott's important but dated Bond and Beyond (1987) suggests
part ofthe Bond franchise's cultural acceptance resides its willingness
to change with the times. Bond, Bennett and WooUacott claim, is "[a]
mythic figure who transcends his own variable incarnations. Bond is
always identified with himself but is never quite the same—an ever
mobile signifier" (274). Bennett and WooUacott, as well many ofthe
writers in the essay collection Ian Fleming and James Bond: The
Cultural Politics of 007, cite Umberto Eco's writing on Fleming's
novels concerning Bond as a brand, as something "already there." In
presenting a Bond who is simultaneously "already there" and unknown.
Casino Royale provides a significant, and according to Lessig, new,
artifact in pop ...

“Three decades of life in the Mafia”
Director of Cinematography: Michael Ballhaus.
Film Editor: Thelma Schoonmaker.
“As far back as I can remember, I have always wanted to be a gangster” this what Henry Hill “Ray Liotta”, who was the main character in Goodfellas, said after his partners killed someone in their car trunk with no merci. The Goodfellas’ storyline was based on a true story about Henry Hill from his early life when he was part of one of the Mafia gangs with two partners James Conway- Jimmy “Robert Di Nero” and Tommy DeVitoo “Joe Pesci”, until he became FBI informant. The movie was directed by Martin Scorsese the one who made a lot of great movies about Mafia and Italian-American in general. There are three main reasons made this movie special: The characters, the Cinematography, and finally the Mis En Scen. Every aspect of those was telling me that I’m front of a masterpiece.
“Actually I don’t know why they put Robert Di Niro in the middle of the poster! He wasn’t the main character. The whole story was telling by Henry Hill “Ray Liotta”. So, I believe that Ray Liotta should be in the middle of the poster!” this is what my friend was complaining about it at the end of the movie. For me, I found that very smart! Even if Henry Hill “Ray Liotta” was the narrative of the whole story. Even if everything was from his point of view, the audience can easily see Jimmy “Robert Di Niro” as the main character from the beginning when the movie introduced him as an important and likeable person when he walked into the gambling room and everyone gave him a warm greeting. Also, the whole movie was like a line for his character. For example at the beginning he was one of three partners. Then, when they became the number one in the drug business he started making noise as a leader and that grabbed our attention as audience. After that, at the end he became the leader when he shoveled his partners and became the only one in his passion! So, for me, this kind of movies make Robert Di Niro a Method actor.
In another hand, I believe that the scene which started by Tommy DiVito “Joe Pesc” telling jokes until he turned that around to “What do you mean I’m funny?” and the whole crazy things that happened after that, can show Joe Pesci’s career as a Character actor. It was, funny, crazy and tart scene. However, this scene would take me to the next great thing in this movie which is the Cinematography.
In the “what do you mean I’m funny?” scene wasn’t there much space between the main subject Henry Hill “Ray Liotta” and his people. Also, the same when the camera turned to Tommy DiVito “Joe Pesc” it was tight framing. However, that let us feel the jokes when see the people are laughing around them and feel how everyone is a leader who has men under his power. Also, make the audience feel how their prestige is very important to them. Another example about the great tight framing image, after Henry Hill “Ray Liotta” we.
1. My goal was to show that past and present presidents are similar to movie and TV characters. Bush & Cheney I chose to make them the Dukes of Hazard because while Bush was in office it seemed as if these two would get into some sort of trouble every week and then “jump the General Lee” over the bill of rights to get out of the “bucket of syrup” they got themselves into. Luka DivacMONTAGE POSTERS
2. Abraham Lincoln I put Honest Abe on the movie poster of Liar Liar in place of Jim Carrey’s character Fletcher Reed because in the film Fletcher cannot lie and only tells the truth which is what Abraham Lincoln is known for. Bill Clinton “If nothing else, you have to say that President Clinton -- it was fun... I mean, every day he's in another jam, and not a fender bender, either -- the kind of stuff that James Bond can't get out of... Caught on camera lying. Lying! On camera! How does he get out of it? He debates the meaning of the word 'is.' That's classy. You know, even James Bond would be like, 'Wow. Full marks, lad. Normally, I have to use a jet pack.‘”
3. Obama & Biden Obama and Biden are similar to an 80’s cop flick. Obama is the new rookie who just got in the game while Biden is the old chief who has been doing this for years. Ronald Reagan Reagan was a huge fan of Star Wars. So much in fact that at one point he said that the United States was building a Death Star as seen in the movie. During press conferences and interviews it always seemed that he was imagining himself somewhere else, somewhere in a galaxy far, far away as Obi-Ron Kenobi.
4. My inspiration for this project was Patton Oswalt’s standup comedy where he mentions that Bush and Cheney are the Dukes of Hazard. After listening to this I decided that I wanted to create a visual image for his comparison and for any other presidents that other comedians may have mentioned. I used Photoshop to superimpose the faces of the presidents onto the faces of their comparisons.
