5. LABOURERS ARE FEW
Matthew 9:35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages,
teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of
the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them,
because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without
a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is
plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the
harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

7. CHRIST’S MISSION
Matthew 9:35 Jesus went through
all the towns and villages,
teaching in their synagogues,
proclaiming the good news of the
kingdom and healing every
disease and sickness.
8. CHRIST’S MISSION
Teaching – a New dimension to living
Preaching – Announcing the good news
Healing – Wholistic - Body, mind, and spirit –
with focus on the spirit – it is lifelong lifestyle
process
Note the sequence of Jesus’ activities also
seen in Matt 4:23
Teaching, preaching, healing. Today, this order
is reversed
9. DISCUSSION
Reflect the importance and impact ot
“teaching, preaching, healing”
sequence in Jesus’ ministry.
How can that sequence be translated
today?
10. CHRIST’S MISSION
TEACHING, PREACHING, HEALING
Teaching – mental response – closely coupled with
preaching. Effective only if accompanied by Holy Spirit
conviction
Preaching – emotional or psycological response. Effective
only if accompanied by Holy Spirit conviction
Healing - attracts people for the physical benefit.
Jesus healed to:
• connect people to the messianic prophecy
• show us God’s desire for wholistic healing – inside out
• Demonstrate that soul healing holds far more weight than
physical healing
11. CHRIST’S
COMPASSION
Matt 9:36 When he saw the
crowds, he had compassion on
them, because they were
harassed and helpless, like sheep
without a shepherd.
12. CHRIST’S
COMPASSION
In His compassion, He sees their true
condition and true need.
The root word for harassed is flayed –
stripping off the skin.
People were exhausted, helpless implying as a
corpse – having the root word meaning thrown
down, neglected, bullied and oppressed.
The Pharisees’ leadership was ushering in
death and not life.
13. OUR COMMISSION
37 Then he said to his
disciples, “The harvest is
plentiful but the workers
are few. 38 Ask the Lord
of the harvest, therefore,
to send out workers into
his harvest field.”
Plentiful – has a time
factor associated –
urgent, cannot be
delayed
Delayed harvest can be
lost – due to rain or other
mechanisms – ill. All
Saints movie
15. GOD’S INJUNCTION
38 Ask the Lord of
the harvest,
therefore, to send
out workers into
his harvest field.”
There is one
source and one
requirement
Source – The Lord
Requirement –
People (workers)
16. DISCUSSION
When is mission effective?
In what aspects do we divert from
Christ’s model and command for
mission
How can we resolve this?
Editor's Notes
9:35-38 harvest is plentiful
3 things
1. Went out teaching
2. Preaching – proclaiming –calling attention
3. Healing
Something like the great commission…followers do the same. Sequence- teaching, preaching?? and healing. Also ch 4:23- same sequence. People are contented, saturated – teaching is more difficult. Compassion - He sees what they need – harassed (root word means being flayed – having skin tone? Strip off the skin) – exhausted- Pharisees, helpless ((as a corpse) root word thrown down)– neglected- bullied and oppressed. Getting death instead of life. Plentiful – time factor. Cannot be put off. Equates disciples as workers. Ch 10 ”worker is worth his keep”. Ask the Lord – pray. 2 thess 3:1 intent is none is lost. Importance of prayer – start with prayer. Jesus Led by example. Prayer is active..not passive. So also compassion. Jesus went first 2 words. As learning to teaching is praying to going.
Matt 4:23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.

Our commission
Supreme injunction
Preaching – may create emotional or psycological response. Teaching gets the mind to respond in conjunction with the Spirit’s conviction. Healing attracts people for the physical benefit.
Jesus’ taught so that people understand the full implications of the kingdom, its benefits and requirements
He then preached to invite people over into this glorious opportunity.
Healing came in to connect people to the messianic prophecy – to prove He is the Messiah promised and to show them God’s desire for wholistic healing in each of the lives of His children. Healing should be inside out- Starting within and moving outside. Sometimes the reverse happens. As long as the soul receives healing Christ’s objective is met.
Teaching cannot be disjointed with preaching. It is closely coupled. Teaching is the hardest as it is a long time persevering effort. Also teaching people who are contented, saturated is difficult.
Cannot be put off. Equates disciples as workers. Ch 10 ”worker is worth his keep”.
Cannot be put off. Equates disciples as workers. Ch 10 ”worker is worth his keep”.
Injunction is a judicial order to do or refrain from specific acts.
