GPEMEx: GP Level Emergency Management Exercise
Requirement of conducting GPEMEx:
The idea of conducting Emergency Management Exercise at the
grass root level i.e. GP has evolved from this need of reinforcing the
understanding of the multi-dimensional nature of conservation and
Disaster Management at the community level.
4. 2.Objective of GPEMEx
2.1) AIM:
Sharpening the experimental learning of the
community by involving them in a mix of knowledge
sharing and skill demonstration activities.
5. 3)Highlighted points of GP-EMEx
“There is no power for change greater than a community discovering
what it cares about” –by Margaret j. Wheatley.
We(community people) have to protect and sustain the bio-capacity
of land.
It is necessary to take into account nine critical aspects of
conservation which called as “nine planetary Boundaries.” These
include:
Cotn......

7. “Never doubt a small group of thoughtful, and committed
citizens, they can change the world”
The purpose of the G.P level Emex is to help the community
people to create an instrumental framework for critical
thinking on challenges regarding disaster issues.
The Emex are intended to create a symphony of creative and
imaginative minds and voices at the grass root level.

11. TOPICS TO DISCUSS
1) Topics for Sensitization Campaign and
demonstration on protection:
1.1) Importance of Occasion i.e., World Environment Day
1.2) Wetlands
1.3) Green Spaces.
2) Awareness Campaign/Preparedness Programme
on :-
2.1 ) Earthquake.

safety
12. 1) TOPICS FOR SENSITIZATION CAMPAIGN AND DEMONSTRATION ON PROTECTION:
1.1) IMPORTANCE OF OCCASION I.E, WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
The world seems to be waking up to the issue of climate change
and just how precarious the situation of the environment is. The
condition of the environment hangs in the balance and it is the
choices that we make that can make such a huge difference.
Days like World Environment Day (WED) help bring these
issues to the consciousness of people all around the world.
Theme of world environment day
2017: “CONECTING PEOPLE TO
NATURE”
13. 1.2)WETLANDS
Wetlands provide significant economic, social and cultural benefits.
They are important for primary products such as pastures, timber and
fish and support recreational and tourist activities. Wetlands also help
reduce the impacts from storm damage and flooding, maintain good
water quality in rivers, recharge groundwater, store carbon, help
stabilise climatic conditions and control pests. They are also important
sites for biodiversity.
Theme of world wetland day 2017: “Wetlands for disaster risk
reduction”
14. 1.3)GREEN SPACES
Green spaces are a great benefit to our environment. They
filter pollutants and dust from the air, they provide shade
and lower temperatures in urban areas, and they even
reduce erosion of soil into our waterways. These are just a
few of the environmental benefits that green spaces
provide.
Urban advantages
Water quality protection.
Reduced heat build-up.
Reduced soil erosion.
Improved air quality
Natural resource conservation
Green roofs cool urban hot spots.
Cooler summer days.
“At least does not Ruin the life of those Trees, depending on
whom we live, lets prove that we are Humans.....”

17. 2.2 )Flood Preparedness
A few hours spent making your home secure, preparing an emergency kit
and flood plan can help you to survive the affect of a flood:
You need to:
1)Understand the flood risk to your area
2)Prepare your home and property
3)Respond when water comes
4)Recover after a flood
You can prepare for flooding in a number of ways:
1)Check with your local council about local flood plans or records which
detail problem areas
2) Ask authorities about relocation routes and centres
3) If your area is flood prone consider alternatives to carpets
4)Prepare an emergency kit
5)Prepare a household flood plan
6)Keep a list of emergency telephone numbers on display
18. If flooding is due make your safety a priority and if you have time try to
prepare your property:
Secure hazardous items
Roll up rugs, move furniture, electrical items and valuables to a higher level
Place important personal documents, valuables and vital medical supplies into a
waterproof case in an accessible location
Too late to leave:
Monitor your local radio for warnings and advice
Get to higher ground
Switch off electricity and gas supplies to your home
Check your emergency kit
Do not allow children to play in or near floodwaters
Avoid entering flood waters, if you must do so, wear solid shoes and check depth
and current with a stick
Stay away from drains, culverts and water over knee deep.
Do not use gas or electrical appliances that have been in flood water until checked
for safety
Do not eat food that has been in floodwaters
Boil tap water until supplies have been declared safe.
19. 2.3) Rescue , injury management and First AID & school
safety:
2.3.a) During a Fire
step1 Crawl low under any smoke to your exit - heavy smoke and poisonous gases collect
first along the ceiling.
Step2 there is smoke blocking your door or first way out, use your second way out.
Step3 Before opening a door, feel the doorknob and door. If either is hot, leave the door
closed and use your second way out.
Step4 If there is smoke coming around the door, leave the door closed and use your
second way out.
Step5 If you open a door, open it slowly. Be ready to shut it quickly if heavy smoke or fire is
present.
20. 2.3.b) Escaping a Fire
Make sure windows are not nailed or painted shut.
Make sure security gratings on windows have a fire
safety opening feature so they can be easily opened
from the inside.
Consider escape ladders if your building has more
than one level, and ensure that burglar bars and other
anti-theft mechanisms that block outside window entry
are easily opened from the inside.
Teach others to stay low to the floor (where the air is
safer in a fire) when escaping from a fire.
21. 3) FIRST AID at school level:
A basic first aid kit may contain:
scissors
safety pins
sticky tape
cough medicine
antiseptic cream
triangular bandages
antihistamine tablets
crêpe rolled bandages
disposable sterile gloves
thermometer (preferably digital)
cream or spray to relieve insect bites
skin rash cream, such as hydrocortisone
plasters in a variety of different sizes and shapes
