Gonojagoron Moncho is a popular social movement in Bangladesh that began in February 2013 in Shahbag to demand death sentences for those convicted of war crimes during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. The movement gained widespread support across different classes and sectors of Bangladeshi society and highlighted debates around secularism and religion in politics. Thousands of students, teachers, journalists, and bloggers participated in protests in Dhaka and other cities. While some protests were peaceful, others turned violent with clashes between security forces and opposition activists that led to several deaths on both sides. The movement accused the government of not making enough progress on their demands and attacking activists.
