This veterinarian-presented slide show demonstrates biomedical research using research animals benefits humans and other animals as well. In answering the animal "rights" oriented question of the ethics of doing research in living creatures, it instead makes the case that not doing the research is the true unethical position as advancements never made help no creature. Turning away from animals as vessels of biologic understanding is a turn away from enlightenment. Veterinarians who care for patients should understand that without animal-based research there can be no treatments and suffering writ large remains more widespread.
- Dr. Richard DeAndrea discusses regenerative and cellular therapies that are at the forefront of next generation healthcare approaches. These therapies aim to be integrative, affordable, and use advanced regenerative techniques.
- Adipose stem cells are highlighted as a promising source for cellular therapy due to their abundance and ability to help repair and regenerate multiple organs in the body with few side effects. Adipose stem cell therapy is described as a painless, minimally invasive procedure that provides lasting benefits for conditions like arthritis and skin rejuvenation.
- The future of healthcare is positioned as focusing more on regeneration and renewal rather than just medication and interference. Holistic regenerative approaches aim to bring balance and improve
This document discusses advances in cellular therapy and stem cells. It discusses the vision of using regenerative therapies to prevent and reverse disease and extend human potential. It outlines that adipose stem cells are abundant, accessible through a minimally invasive procedure, and have shown benefits in treating many conditions from arthritis to organ diseases. The process involves harvesting stem cells from fat tissue, separating and activating the cells, then returning them to the body where they home to target areas and may provide lasting benefits like improved energy, clarity, skin health and more. Current regulations exempt autologous stem cell transplants done in a single procedure.
This document summarizes issues related to women's cancer and modern cancer treatment approaches. It notes that cancer rates have increased dramatically in recent decades despite little change in survival rates. Conventional treatments like chemotherapy, radiation and surgery are discussed, as well as alternatives like diet changes, supplements and non-toxic therapies. Concerns about environmental toxins, pharmaceutical drugs, and other modern factors that may contribute to cancer risks are also presented. The document advocates for patient empowerment and informed consent regarding cancer treatment options.
Steve Jobs was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at age 48 in 2003, with symptoms starting at age 24. He died from the disease at age 56 in 2011. Vitamin D from moderate sun exposure without sunscreen may help lower the risk of certain cancers like pancreatic, as it is nearly 50% less likely in those with higher vitamin D levels from sun exposure. While surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy have been standard cancer treatments for decades, they have shown little improvement in overall survival rates for all cancers in the last 55 years. Alternative non-toxic treatments exist but are suppressed.
This document discusses various health issues affecting society such as neurological disorders, cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and mental health disorders. It attributes the rise of these non-communicable diseases to factors like toxic food, lack of activity, toxic medical care, and toxic lifestyles. Various studies and data are presented arguing that vaccines, pharmaceutical drugs, and modern western diets high in processed foods and industrial oils are significant contributing causes of the growing chronic disease burden through their toxic and epigenetic effects. Alternative views of health, disease, and medical treatment are proposed focusing on homeostasis, allostasis, and lifestyle-based primary prevention approaches.
The immune system involves collection of cells that protect the body from microbes and bacteria and hence tries to protect the body from diseases. Innate immunity and adaptive immunity are the two divisions in which the defense of the body against microbes works. Cancer immunotherapy refers to a biological therapy that tries to suppress or stimulate the immune system of an individual with the help of substances such that the body becomes capable of fighting cancer, and other infections or diseases. This literature reviewaimed to review many aspects regarding immune therapy regarding breast cancer.
Breast cancer is caused by genetic mutations in cells that can be influenced by environmental factors like diet and lifestyle. Adopting a whole-food, plant-based diet with lots of raw foods and limiting alcohol, smoking, and processed foods can significantly reduce the risk of gene mutations that cause breast cancer by up to 8 times. Regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, breastfeeding children, and avoiding unnecessary radiation exposures are also recommended to prevent breast cancer.

The immune system document discusses several key points about the immune system and disease:
1. It discusses Koch's postulates and how they have been challenged, as bacteria are not always the sole cause of disease and can be effects rather than causes.
2. It emphasizes that the true cause of disease is a weakened immune system, and lists several autoimmune conditions.
3. It discusses how factors like pathogens, adjuvants, vaccines, and aluminum can negatively impact the immune system and potentially cause immune-mediated diseases.
The document discusses menstrual blood banking, which is the process of collecting and storing menstrual blood stem cells. Menstrual blood contains a large number of self-renewing stem cells that can differentiate into various body cell types. These stem cells have properties similar to bone marrow and embryonic stem cells. The stem cells from menstrual blood have a 100 times higher success rate than bone marrow stem cells. Menstrual blood banking was launched in 2007 in the US and 2011 in India. The process involves women collecting their menstrual blood at home using a menstrual cup and mailing it to a bank for stem cell processing and cryogenic storage.
This document discusses cancer and challenges common perceptions about it being a deadly disease. It claims that cancer develops as a survival mechanism by the body, not as an illness, and questions why cancer is seen as having power over life and death. It argues that the real causes behind tumor growth are often ignored, and standard cancer treatments may not cure cancer but further damage the body.
This document discusses cancer and its causes. It argues that cancer is caused by a lack of oxygen in cells, causing them to switch from aerobic to anaerobic respiration and grow uncontrollably. It notes that oxygen levels in the atmosphere have dropped significantly since the industrial revolution. Maintaining an alkaline pH and avoiding toxins, stress and an unhealthy lifestyle can help ensure adequate oxygen in cells and reduce cancer risks. Over $2 trillion has been spent on cancer research but it remains a major killer, suggesting prevention through lifestyle factors may be more effective than treatment alone.
Malaria is a life-threatening disease. It’s typically transmitted through the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito. Infected mosquitoes carry the Plasmodium parasite. When this mosquito bites you, the parasite is released into your bloodstream.
Once the parasites are inside your body, they travel to the liver, where they mature. After several days, the mature parasites enter the bloodstream and begin to infect red blood cells. Within 48 to 72 hours, the parasites inside the red blood cells multiply, causing the infected cells to burst open.
The parasites continue to infect red blood cells, resulting in symptoms that occur in cycles that last 2 to 3 days at a time.
Cancer is the leading cause of death for older dogs, accounting for around 50% of canine deaths each year. If caught early, cancer can be successfully treated through veterinary oncology, the study of animal cancers, and veterinary oncologists who specialize in cancer diagnosis and treatment for pets. Being aware of potential clinical signs of cancer in dogs allows for early detection and care.
Did you know that your genes can be turned on and off based on physical, chemical or emotional stress? It's called epigenetics and is critical in understanding how the body works. Cancer is NOT genetic.
Cancer is a leading cause of death in the US and around the world. The document discusses various causes of cancer like tobacco, alcohol, red meat, processed meat, and lack of exercise. It also discusses ways to prevent cancer through diet and lifestyle changes like eating more plants and less red meat and processed meat. For cancer treatment, the document discusses surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and their side effects, as well as the limitations of modern medicine and importance of lifestyle in recovery from cancer.
This document discusses various topics related to veterinary science including zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, vaccines, eggs and milk as food supplements, and career opportunities in veterinary science. It defines key terms and highlights the importance of vaccination in preventing disease outbreaks and protecting public health. Career opportunities mentioned include working for government organizations, private practice, pharmaceutical companies, and livestock industries. Study tips emphasized include sitting up front in class, reading textbooks, taking good notes, setting a schedule, managing time well, dedicating effort, studying in groups, and balancing commitments while reviewing material regularly.
Advances in Stem Cell Therapies: Still Experimental, or Ready to Go?DrDeAndrea
1) A stem cell researcher in Japan claimed a major discovery by turning adult blood cells into stem cells quickly through acid exposure, but her work is under investigation.
2) Stem cell therapies are generally considered safer when using a patient's own cells, and regulations may be prohibiting doctors from trying to cure patients with autologous stem cell treatments.
3) Pharmaceutical companies could feel threatened by stem cell therapies becoming as common as drugs, representing mobile pharmacies of healing factors, within 20 years according to one scientist.
The document discusses 10 common myths about cancer, including that all cancers are the same, that cell phones cause cancer, and that a positive attitude alone can cure cancer. It explains that while there is no single cure for cancer as a broad category, individual cancers can be cured through various treatments. It also debunks myths that artificial sweeteners and cancer screenings always find cancerous lumps. The document aims to provide accurate information about cancer and dispel widely believed misconceptions.
CANCER IS THE WORLD’S LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH, BUT ABOUT 1 IN 3 CASES CAN BE PREVENTED, ACCORDING TO THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION.
THERE’S NO MAGIC PILL TO KEEP YOU FROM GETTING CANCER, BUT YOU Can DO SOME THINGS TO IMPROVE YOUR ODDS
Medical research has saved countless lives by developing cures and treatments for diseases like polio, cancer, and diabetes. However, animal rights activists oppose research that uses animals, creating hurdles for medical progress. Both sides make reasonable arguments - medical research benefits humans but causes animal suffering. The document argues we must find a solution that allows research to continue while also protecting animals, perhaps through more humane treatment laws.
No, I have not heard of cancer occurring in red blood cells or heart muscle cells. Cancer is generally considered a disease of epithelial cells (cells that line surfaces in the body) and other cell types like lymphocytes and bone marrow cells. Red blood cells and cardiac muscle cells do not typically undergo cell division, which is required for cancer development. So while it is theoretically possible, it is extremely rare to have cancers originate from these cell types.

Cancer is considered as most dreadful disease. Incidence of cancer has been rising in recent times. Number of reasons like harmful environment, irregular lifestyle & bad inherited genes contribute to it. It causes lot of emotional stress & anxiety, not only to patients but also to family & friends. In order to fight cancer, it is essential to understand why cancer occurs & how it can be cured with a more holistic approach.
Cancer is caused by abnormal cell growth and can invade other organs, potentially leading to death. Theories of cancer development include mutations in proto-oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, and DNA repair genes. Most cancers are caused by mutations in somatic cells from external agents or randomly, though some are hereditary. Cancers are classified by their cell of origin and some show genetic tendencies. Incidence and mortality of certain cancers like lung, breast, colorectal, and stomach are provided. Prevention strategies include controlling risk factors like tobacco, diet, and environment as well as screening and early diagnosis.
The document provides an overview of 10 key things to know about cancer. It discusses that cancer is the abnormal growth of cells that can spread, and that the symptoms depend on the cancer type. The causes of some cancers are unknown. Cancers are typically diagnosed via biopsies, and treatment depends on the cancer type and stage. A cancer diagnosis causes anxiety for patients and loved ones, and support groups are available to help cope. A patient's prognosis depends on the specific cancer type and stage of diagnosis.
This document discusses various topics related to cancer, including increasing cancer rates, flaws in conventional cancer treatments, and alternative natural treatments. It notes that cancer rates have increased significantly in recent decades and survival rates have not improved much in 55 years. It questions the suppression of alternative cancer cures and discusses how various foods, drugs, and other toxins may contribute to cancer development and rates. Natural alternative treatments for cancer are presented, along with cases of cancer being cured without conventional treatments.

INTRODUCE SELF AND KRISTEN. SAY WHAT YOU DO FOR A LIVING. (DVM, MS, MPH) (CAH, CVMF, AMP) SAY THAT YOU PLAN TO EXPLAIN HOW RESEARCH AFFECTS ANIMALS YOU CARE FOR. SAY THAT YOU WILL OFFER SOME EXAMPLES. THIS PRESENTATION IS DEDICATED TO JAKE, WHO WE WILL LEARN MORE ABOUT BIT LATER Coincidentally Jake died today, April 8, 2006
How many have ever been sick? How many have ever taken medicine? How many have ever had a vaccine? How many use an asthma inhaler? How many know someone who has had cancer? How many know someone who has had surgery? Is there anyone who has not raised their hand at least once?
THIS PHOTO FROM 1975 INTRODUCES A FAMILY IN WHICH EACH MEMBER DIED FROM A DIFFERENT ILLNESS. NOTE HENRY, AS WE WILL COME BACK TO HIM LATER. A FACT OF LIFE IS THAT ILLNESS EVENTUALLY AFFECTS EVERYONE. I BELIEVE THAT WITH FUTURE RESEARCH, MANY MORE ILLNESSES WILL ONE DAY BE PREVENTABLE, CURABLE OR TREATABLE.
THERE’S MORE TO RESEARCH THEN JUST HELPING PEOPLE. AS A VETERINARIAN, I CARE DEEPLY ABOUT MY ANIMAL PATIENTS AND WE NEED NEW TREATMENTS FOR THEIR AILMENTS. THE CREATION OF THESE TREATMENTS CAN ONLY OCCUR IN RESEARCH USING RESEARCH ANIMALS. NATURALLY OCCURRING DISEASE IS NOT PREDICTABLE ENOUGH AND PET OWNERS WANT ONLY KNOWN EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS. WE CAN’T KNOW WHAT ILLNESSES ANY OF US WILL GET BUT WE HOPE EFFECTIVE TREATMENT WILL BE AVAILABLE WHEN THE TIME COMES.
CLEARLY THERE ARE ETHICAL AND MORAL CONSIDERATIONS MADE WHEN LIVING CREATURES ARE USED IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH. I ASK YOU TO CONSIDER WHETHER IS MORE ETHICAL TO HUMANELY USE ANIMALS IN RESEARCH TO ADVANCE MEDICINE OR TO LEAVE ANIMALS UNUSED, BUT TO LEAVE AVENUES OF EXPLORATION UNPROBED. IF WE CHOOSE THE LATTER COURSE, WE WILL NEVER KNOW IF A LINE OF INQUIRY MIGHT HAVE LED TO A CURE FOR DISEASE. I AM HERE IN SUPPORT OF RESEARCH. AND WHILE I CARE ABOUT THE LIVES OF INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH ANIMALS, I ALSO LOOK AT THE RELATIVE BENEFIT TO POPULATIONS OF ANIMALS OR HUMANS, AND WEIGHT THAT MORE THAN A SINGLE INDIVIDUAL. TO ME IT IS A CLEAR REALITY THAT THERE IS NO FORSEEABLE WAY TO ELIMINATE ANIMAL BASED RESEARCH ON THE HORIZON. CLAIMS TO THE CONTRARY ARE AT BEST WISHFUL THINKING, AND AT WORST A TURN AWAY FROM ENLIGHTENMENT.
HERE ARE 10 EXAMPLES OF RESEARCH-DERIVED MEDICAL DEVELOPMENTS THAT BENEFIT PEOPLE. [READ THREE FROM EACH COLUMN] AND THERE ARE MYRIAD MORE THAN JUST THESE……
[READ THE NAMES OF THE RED HIGHLIGHTS] BEFORE THESE MEDICAL ADVANCES, HUMAN LIFE WAS SHORTER, MORE BRUTAL AND LESS PRODUCTIVE. IN FACT WE HAVE BEEN SO HEALTHY, THAT THE REALITY OF MANY DISEASES IS ALMOST FORGOTTEN.
THESE DEVELOPMENTS HAVE NOT JUST BENEFITTED PEOPLE. ON THE CONTRARY, THIS IS A SHORT LIST OF COMMON VETERINARY VACCINES, ALL DEVELOPED IN RESEARCH ANIMALS. A VARIETY PRODUCTS USED IN PETS, FOOD ANIMALS AND WILDLIFE ARE INCLUDED HERE TO ILLUSTRATE THE POINT.
THIS SLIDE SHOWS PUBLISHED STATISTICS ON MEDICAL SERVICE USAGE FOR THE US IN 2008. EACH INTERVENTION WAS TESTED IN ANIMALS BEFORE USE IN PEOPLE. NOTE THAT ALMOST 50% OF AMERICANS (THERE’S 325 MILLION OF US) BENEFITTED FROM ANTIBIOTICS THAT YEAR. IN DECADES PAST, MANY THOSE PEOPLE WOULD HAVE DIED FROM THEIR ILLNESSES.
HOW MANY AND WHAT TYPE OF ANIMALS ARE USED IN RESEARCH? TAKE NOTE OF THE DECLINING NUMBERS OF ANIMALS USED, ESPECIALLY OF CATS, DOGS AND PRIMATES. THESE NUMBERS HAVE STEADILY FALLEN. INDEED MOST RESEARCH IS NOW DONE IN MICE, RATS, RABBITS AND ZEBRAFISH. THE NUMBERS HAVE FALLEN NOT BECAUSE LESS RESEARCH IS BEING DONE, OR THAT THE NEED FOR IT HAS LESSENED BUT BECAUSE OF AN INTENTION TO MINIMIZE THE NUMBERS, BOTH FOR ETHICAL AND COST SAVINGS REASONS.. TODAY TOTAL NUMBERS USED ARE DOWN FROM A HIGH OF OVER 2 MILLION IN 1985 TO LESS THAN 1 MILLION TOTAL TODAY. HIGHER SPECIES USE HAS BEEN REDUCED EVEN FURTHER.
WHEN LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS OF ANIMALS USED IN RESEARCH, COMPARE THE NUMBERS OF ANIMALS USED FOR OTHER PURPOSES. 9 BILLION CHICKENS ARE RAISED FOR FOOD IN THE US ANNUALLY AS ARE 105 MILLION HOGS RAISED FOR BACON AND PORK. THIS CONTRASTS WITH JUST 1 MILLION RESEARCH ANIMALS. UNLESS YOU BELIEVE THAT HUMAN USE OF ANIMALS FOR FOOD OR RESEARCH ARE WRONG, IT IS EVIDENT THAT THE MAGNITUDE OF THAT USE, IS FAR LESS IN RESEARCH.
EVERY INSTITUTION THAT DOES RESEARCH IN ANIMALS HAS AN “IACUC”, A COMMITTEE WHICH INCLUDES THE PRIMARY CARE VETERINARIAN FOR THE INSTITUTION, AS WELL AS OTHER ACADEMICS AND MEMBERS OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. THEY ENSURE THAT RESEARCH IS DONE SUCH THAT SUFFERING IS AVOIDED OR MINIMIZED. THE IACUC IS RESPONSIBLE TO THE INSTITUTION, WHOSE REPUTATION AND GRANT FUNDING HINGE ON PROPER ADHERENCE TO THE LAW. THAT LAW IS ENFORCED BY THE USDA, WHICH HAS THE LEGAL AUTHORITY TO ENSURE ANIMAL WELFARE STANDARDS ARE MET. UNTREATED PAIN IS ONLY PERMITTED IF THE RESEARCH ITSELF IS EVALUATING PAIN RELIEF MEDICATIONS, AND ALLEVIATING PAIN WITH OTHER DRUGS WOULD COMPROMISE THE RESEARCH ITSELF.

HIS LIFE REFLECTS A COMMON SCENARIO FOR HIGHER SPECIES IN RESEARCH TODAY: THE ANIMALS ARE FREQUENTLY ADOPTED BY EMPLOYEES ONCE THE STUDIES THEY ARE INVOLVED WITH IS COMPLETE. I SAW THIS REPEATEDLY WHILE IN VETERINARY SCHOOL AND IT OCCURS TODAY.
THE 3R’S (REFINE, REDUCE, REPLACE) ARE STANDARD POLICY AND PROCEDURE FOR TODAY’S RESEARCHERS. THIS IS TRUE BECAUSE: SOCIETY HAS A MORAL INTEREST IN LIMITING ANIMAL SUFFERING FUNDING AGENCIES HAVE A FINANCIAL INTEREST IN USING THE RIGHT NUMBER OF ANIMALS, NO MORE NO LESS INSTITUTION HAS AN OBLIGATION TO CONDUCT RESEARCH ETHICALLY AND LEGALLY INVESTIGATOR NEEDS TO HAVE VALID RESULTS, BUT WORK WITHIN A BUDGET
REFINEMENT IS ABOUT QUALITY OF LIFE FOR THE RESEARCH ANIMALS. LIVING CONDITIONS, INCLUDING ENVIRONMENTAL ENRICHMENT PAIN RELIEF WHENEVER POSSIBLE, AND TREATMENT FOR NATURALLY OCCURRING ILLNESS TRAINING AND CREDENTIALLING OF CAREGIVERS (CVT, RVT, LVT)
REDUCTION IS ABOUT USING THE MINIMUM NUMBER OF ANIMALS TO ENSURE A STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT SAMPLE, AVOIDING EQUIVOCAL RESULTS OR THE NEED FOR REPETITION. MISSING A STATISTICALLY VALID ASSOCIATION MAY MEAN MISSING A NEW TREATMENT OR STRATEGY TO TREAT DISEASE. EXPERIMENTS NEED TO BE CAREFULLY PLANNED, NOT LEAST BECAUSE THE USE OF ANIMAL LIFE TO GAIN NEW KNOWLEDGE REQUIRES SERIOUSNESS OF PURPOSE. USE OF FEWEST ANIMALS OVERALL THROUGH REUSE OF SAME ANIMALS
REPLACEMENT MEANS, WHERE POSSIBLE, TO ELIMINATE THE USE OF ANIMALS THROUGH NON-ANIMAL TECHNIQUES. THIS IS MOST USEFUL IN THE EARLIEST STAGES OF RESEARCH, BUT DOES NOT OBVIATE THE NEED FOR LATER CLINICAL TRIALS IN ANIMALS. IT IS A LAUDABLE FUTURE GOAL TO REPLACE ANIMALS WHENEVER POSSIBLE AND PRACTICAL. THE TAKE HOME MESSAGE HERE, IS THAT THIS IS NOT TRUE TODAY AND IS UNLIKELY TO BE TRUE IN YOUR LIFETIMES.
ALTERNATIVES TO USING ANIMALS IN RESEARCH ARE FREQUENTLY RAISED AS A REASON TO STOP USING ANIMALS NOW. THESE TECHNIQUES DO HAVE LIMITED USEFULNESS, BUT IT IS FANTASY THAT THEY CAN FULLY SUBSTITUTE FOR EVALUATING TREATMENTS IN LIVING SPECIES. CELL OR TISSUE CULTURE CAN TELL US THE EFFECT OF A SUBSTANCE ON INDIVIDUAL CELLS, BUT NOT ENTIRE ORGANS AND NOT ENTIRE LIVING ORGANISMS. … AND THIS IS BLUE GEN / L THE FASTEST SUPERCOMPUTER CURRENTLY OPERATIONAL TODAY. AT FULL CAPACITY IT IS ESTIMATED TO BE CAPABLE OF SIMULATING 50% OF THE OPERATIONS OF A RATS BRAIN, AND AT 1/10TH THE RATS COMPUTING SPEED. MORE FUNDAMENTALLY, HOWEVER, COMPUTERS ARE CALCULATING DEVICES WITH METHODS AND DATA PROGRAMMED AND INPUT BY PEOPLE. BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES ARE FAR MORE COMPLEX THAN OUR ABILITY TO ACCURATELY AND COMPLETELY PREDICT THEM. IT IS HUMAN ARROGANCE TO SUPPOSE THAT WE CAN MODEL AN ENTIRE LIVING CREATURE ACCURATELY IN DISEASE, MUCH LESS IN RESPONSE TO A PROPOSED NEW TREATMENT FOR DISEASE.
IN SUMMARY: CRUCIAL BECAUSE WE NEED TREATMENT FOR DISEASE IRREPLACEABLE BECAUSE NO OTHER METHOD WORKS HUMANE BECAUSE OVERSEEN AND REGULATED
NOW FOR AN EXAMPLE OF RESEARCH IN ACTION JAKE WAS KRISTEN’S DOG. AND JAKE MADE MEDICAL HISTORY. YOU WILL ALSO SEE THAT NOT ALL RESEARCH OCCURS SOLELY IN RESEARCH ANIMALS.
IN DISCUSSING JAKE WE WILL ALSO TALK ABOUT HENRY. THAT’S BECAUSE BOTH JAKE AND HENRY HAD MELENOMA, A FORM OF CANCER. MELENOMA WAS ONE FORM OF CANCER, LIKE PANCREATIC CANCER, THAT WAS UNIFORMLY A DEATH SENTENCE. IT WAS AS TRUE FOR ANIMALS AS WELL AS PEOPLE.
AT THE TIME OF JAKE’S DIAGNOSIS OF NAILBED MELENOMA IN SEPTEMBER 2000, A METASTATIC MASS WAS ALSO FOUND IN HIS CHEST. SURGERY OFFERED NO ASSURANCE OF COMPLETE REMOVAL, AS MICROSCOPIC METASTASIS WAS LIKELY LURKING ELSEWHERE. KRISTEN REFUSED TO ACCEPT THE POOR PROGNOSIS AND WE LEARNED OF A STUDY IN NYC THAT WAS ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS. SHE INVESTIGATED THAT STUDY AND JAKE WAS ENROLLED, AND THE REST IS MEDICAL HISTORY…
ONE YEAR LATER, JAKE HAD ALREADY SURVIVED 200% LONGER THAN ANY PRIOR DOG WITH THIS DIAGNOSIS THIS XRAY IMAGE SHOWS REGRESSION OF MASS AND MORE SIGNIFICANTLY NO FURTHER SPREAD
AFTER FOUR AND 1/2 MORE YEARS, THE MASS REMAINED BUT EVEN SMALLER, AND JAKE WAS STILL ALIVE. HE WAS NOW 15 YEARS OLD….NEAR THE END OF HIS EXPECTED LIFESPAN, INDEED BEYOND THAT OF THE TYPICAL LARGER DOG.
BY APRIL 2003 THE DATA DERIVED FROM THE STUDIES IN WHICH JAKE WAS ENROLLED BEGAN TO APPEAR IN SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS THIS RESEARCH, STARTED IN MICE, WAS NOW DOCUMENTED AS BENEFICIAL TO CLINICAL CASES IN DOGS
BY MARCH 2007, A COMMERCIAL VACCINE PRODUCT IS MADE AVAILABLE FOR ALL DOGS WITH MELANOMA AND MEANWHILE……THE DRAMATIC SUCCESS IN CANINE PATIENTS LED THE FDA TO ALLOW “FAST TRACK” CLINICAL TRIALS IN HUMAN PATIENTS
THIS WORK SHOWS THAT RESEARCH DONE IN ONE SPECIES CAN DIRECTLY RELATE TO SOLVING PROBLEMS IN THAT SPECIES AND OTHERS. PEOPLE ARE ALIVE TODAY BECAUSE OF RESEARCH BEGUN IN MICE, STUDIED FURTHER IN DOGS AND FINALLY TRIALLED IN PEOPLE. COMPARATIVE & COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH, BETWEEN & AMONG SPECIES AND DISCIPLINES IS THE ESSENCE OF THE “ONE HEALTH” MEDICAL PARADIGM OF TODAY. IT IS THE KEY CONCEPT IN HEALTH RESEARCH TODAY. ONE HEALTH RECOGNIZES THE INTERRELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PEOPLE, ANIMALS AND THE ENVIRONMENT AND HOW THESE INTERACT IN HEALTH AND DISEASE. THIS INTERSECTION BETWEEN SPECIES, PHYSIOLOGY AND PATHOLOGY OFFERS CLUES TO THE WORKINGS OF BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS AND HOW TO CURE THEIR ILLNESSES. ANSWERS ARE SOUGHT, EVERYWHERE.
KRISTEN’S BELOVED DOG JAKE DID UNFORTUNATELY PASS AWAY, BUT NOT OF MELANOMA. BEFORE HE DIED, HE HAD LIVED OVER 15 YEARS, INCLUDING OVER 1000 DAYS WITH MELENOMA IN REMISSION, AND FOR HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCIENCE HE WAS NAMED “CONNECTICUT PET OF THE YEAR” IN 2005. KRISTEN TOOK THE INITIATIVE TO ENROLL JAKE IN THE MELANOMA VACCINE STUDY AND FOLLOW THROUGH WITH DOZENS OF TRIPS TO NYC TO GET HIS VACCINES. KRISTEN WILL TALK ABOUT WHAT JAKE MEANT TO HER, HER THOUGHTS ON SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY AND INTRODUCE A SHORT VIDEO, KRISTEN? [AT CONCLUSION OF VIDEO, KRISTEN GIVES MICROPHONE BACK TO DR ARNIE]
KRISTEN’S COMMENTS: KRISTEN PASSES MICROPHONE BACK TO DR ARNIE AT CONCLUSION OF HER COMMENTS.
I’D LIKE TO TAKE NOTE OF SOME UNSUNG HEROS. REAL HEROES. HEROS WHO MAKE LIFE BETTER FOR PEOPLE AND ANIMALS. THEY’RE NOT ATHLETES OR ENTERTAINERS. THEY’RE SCIENTISTS. JEDD WOLCHOK AND PHIL BERGMAN WOULD NEVER THINK TO CHARACTERIZE THEMSELVES AS HEROS. BUT LOOK WHAT THEY’VE DONE. THEIR RESEARCH COLLABORATION LED TO THE CANINE MELANOMA VACCINE AND IN TURN TO A HUMAN MELANOMA VACCINE. MELANOMA IS TODAY NO LONGER A DEATH SENTENCE, BUT IS A NEWLY TREATABLE DISEASE. I AM IN AWE OF THE MINDS WHO MAKE THESE TYPE OF ADVANCES. REAL HEROS.
NOW WE HAVE COME FULL CIRCLE, BACK TO THE REASON FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH, WHICH IS TO HELP THOSE AFFLICTED WITH ILLNESS. UNCLE HENRY COULD SURVIVE HIS MELANOMA TODAY. OH YES, DID I TELL YOU THIS WAS MY FAMILY? ONE DAY, PERHAPS ALL THE CONDITIONS THIS FAMILY HAD WILL BE TREATABLE OR CURABLE. IF IT HAPPENS, YOU CAN BE SURE THAT THE RESEARCH THAT LED TO IT WILL HAVE BEEN DONE WITH ANIMALS. I BELIEVE NOT DOING THAT RESEARCH IS BOTH UNETHICAL AND IMMORAL.
YOU CAN PLAY A ROLE IN ADVANCING SCIENCE AND MEDICINE, EITHER BY YOUR DIRECT INVOLVEMENT OR JUST THROUGH UNDERSTANDING AND COMMUNICATING TO PEERS, THE TRUTH ABOUT RESEARCH AND THE IMPORTANCE TO ALL LIVING CREATURES, OF CONTINUING TO MAKE MEDICAL PROGRESS BY ALL POSSIBLE MEANS. BE INFORMED ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE AND FACTS OF ANIMALS USED IN RESEARCH. EDUCATE YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS. TAKE SCIENCE CLASSES IN COLLEGE IN ORDER TO BE A MORE EDUCATED CONSUMER OF MEDICAL SERVICES AND A BETTER INFORMED CITIZEN. BETTER STILL, CHOOSE A NATURAL SCIENCE MAJOR AND BE A PART OF AN ENTERPRISE THAT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO SAVE LIVES. BE THE NEXT REAL HERO.
