Goal: Develop a deck of cards for adventure seekers, who are specifically living or travelling in
western united states.
Audience:
� Tourists, age 16- 40, male and female. Income is $15-80K , depending on the level of education.
Concept:
� The point of the cards is to have fun playing, as well as learn about the size of the 13 western
states. Furthermore, the players will learn about how the states look.They will be educational.
For the joker, I will be using the US, because it does not fir with the theme of the 13 states.
Style:
� Theme is Western States, using outlines of states.

Promotional Cards Rationale- Going West
This project started with ideating about different categories that might include 13 of
something. I wanted to do something with landscape, and instead I landed on states. After
conducting research based on assumptions about states, I found out that there are exactly 13
western states I could use for my card deck. Then I got to brainstorming ways of categorizing
the states themselves, and decided to categorize them by size. The idea of categorization by
size seemed like an appropriate educational aspect, and I thought it would be a good idea to
number the states. After conducting visual research, I did not find any western states theme,
other than the wild west. I like the wild west theme, and I also wanted to keep it more modern
by including cyan blue in my design. Therefore, I included blue shades in my mood board and
maps.
Once I started designing the cards, there are a few things that I learned about
transforming different elements. One such learning was flipping the suits around, and by
flipping horizontally first, the vertical flip lands the elements exactly in their place.
When designing of the queen, king, and jack, I wanted to relate them to the states they
represented. For the jack, I picked a native American to relate to New Mexico. For the queen, I
related the rodeo queen to Montana and king to a California cowboy. For the joker, I decided to
have an American joker because it does not completely fit with the western theme.
And for the tuckbox, I wanted to keep a modern look, and I decided on a vector image of a
compass pointing west in cyan color.
