GMES – Global Monitoring for
                                        Environment and Security

GMES will provide accurate, timely and easily accessible information
To improve the management of the environment
To understand and mitigate the effects of climate change
To ensure safety and security for the European citizens.

GMES will consist of
Five families of dedicated Sentinels specifically for the operational needs of
the GMES programme. The Sentinels will be launched from 2013.
Missions from other space agencies, called Contributing Missions - already
providing a wealth of data for GMES services
The In situ Component which focuses on data acquired by a multitude of
sensors on the ground, at sea or in the air.
                                           Lara Schaflinger I 18.03.13 I ©2011 Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen

protect the environment and natural resources, and ensure civil
security, e.g.:
 air-quality forecasting
 flood warnings
early detection of drought and desertification
 early warnings of severe weather
 oil-spill detection and drift prediction
 sea-water quality
 crop analysis
 forest monitoring
 land-use change
 food security and humanitarian aid

The Pilot GeoServer

ESA has configured a pilot server with interfaces to available
GEO data to facilitate simple, centralised access to the data
products of preoperational GMES services.
The pilot server is available free of charge to any GMES
Masters participants interested in infusing their ideas with
real data for testing and optimisation purposes.
The server has made it possible to call up data in the
categories of air, land and water on mobile devices.
Information on further servers containing geo-data is also
provided.
Atmospheric data offers, for example, insights into ozone
levels in the air, while the land data can include settlement
or agriculture maps. The information on water quality,
                                                                              For more information please visit:
