A man-made substance made of the breast cancer drug Herceptin and a glowing molecule called BODIPY was injected into mice with HER2-positive breast cancer and ovarian cancer. The substance only glows inside living cancer cells, allowing doctors to easily spot tumors - in tests on mice, the substance was found only in lung tumors a day after injection and successfully highlighted ovarian cancer in the abdomen.

Endometrial infusion of human chorionic gonadotropin
This randomized controlled trial sought to determine if endometrial infusion of 500 IU of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) diluted in embryo transfer media less than 3 minutes before blastocyst embryo transfer would impact implantation and pregnancy rates. 300 infertile couples undergoing fresh or frozen embryo transfer of one or two blastocysts were randomly assigned to receive either hCG infusion or a sham infusion of media only. The combination of Salmonella-based therapy targeting indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (shIDO-ST) and an enzyme (PEGPH20) that depletes tumor hyaluronan (HA) induced complete regression of aggressive pancreatic tumors in mouse models. Mice treated with this combination showed significant decreases in tumor burden and extended survival, with 30-60% of mice showing no evidence of tumors 8 weeks after treatment. In contrast, other treatment combinations including monotherapies were not effective. The combination of shIDO-ST and PEGPH20 appeared to facilitate entry of bacteria and activated immune cells into otherwise impermeable tumors, highlighting its potential as an effective treatment for pancreatic cancer.

Almost all of the medical innovations (i.e. medicine, vaccines, diagnostic tests etc) that are available to us are products of years of basic science and clinical research. Medical innovations have resulted in improved health and quality of life worldwide. These medical breakthroughs do not happen overnight. They require years of research and discovery and a huge amount of financial support to fund research facilities and human resources. This talk will introduce the long process of how biotechnology research is translated into clinics and public health. Current medical biotechnology researches in the Philippines and abroad will also be discussed. Some of the current medical biotechnology researches being conducted in the Philippines include rapid dengue diagnostic kits, Philippine herbal medicines, and Filipino cardiovascular genetics. These researches continuously revolutionize healthcare in the Philippines. Likewise, groundbreaking biotechnology researches from all other countries also open up new treatment and prevention for different diseases such as HIV, cancer, and metastases. These researches continue to advance modern medicine to address health and development issues worldwide. Continuous partnership and collaboration among the academe, industry, and the government is crucial in supporting more medical biotechnology researches that will provide cheaper and more efficient diagnostics, vaccines and medicines.

The combination of Salmonella-based therapy targeting indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (shIDO-ST) and an enzyme (PEGPH20) that depletes tumor hyaluronan (HA) induced complete regression of aggressive pancreatic tumors in mouse models. Mice treated with this combination showed significant decreases in tumor burden and extended survival, with 30-60% of mice showing no evidence of tumors 8 weeks after treatment. In contrast, other treatment combinations including monotherapies were not effective. The combination of shIDO-ST and PEGPH20 appeared to facilitate entry of bacteria and activated immune cells into otherwise impermeable tumors, highlighting its potential as an effective treatment for pancreatic cancer.
Medical Breakthroughs from the "Baliw na Baliw sa (Biotechnology) Research"
This talk was given during the pre-event Symposium on Biotechnology in Healthcare by the Food and Development Administration of the Philippines.
Almost all of the medical innovations (i.e. medicine, vaccines, diagnostic tests etc) that are available to us are products of years of basic science and clinical research. Medical innovations have resulted in improved health and quality of life worldwide. These medical breakthroughs do not happen overnight. They require years of research and discovery and a huge amount of financial support to fund research facilities and human resources. This talk will introduce the long process of how biotechnology research is translated into clinics and public health. Current medical biotechnology researches in the Philippines and abroad will also be discussed. Some of the current medical biotechnology researches being conducted in the Philippines include rapid dengue diagnostic kits, Philippine herbal medicines, and Filipino cardiovascular genetics. These researches continuously revolutionize healthcare in the Philippines. Likewise, groundbreaking biotechnology researches from all other countries also open up new treatment and prevention for different diseases such as HIV, cancer, and metastases. These researches continue to advance modern medicine to address health and development issues worldwide. Continuous partnership and collaboration among the academe, industry, and the government is crucial in supporting more medical biotechnology researches that will provide cheaper and more efficient diagnostics, vaccines and medicines.

PGx Analysis in VarSeq: A User’s Perspective
Since our release of the PGx capabilities in VarSeq, we’ve had a few months to gather some insights from various use cases. Some users approach PGx workflows by means of array genotyping or what seems to be a growing trend of adding the star allele calling to the existing NGS pipeline for whole genome data. Luckily, both approaches are supported with the VarSeq software platform. The genotyping method being used will also dictate what the scope of the tertiary analysis will be. For example, are your PGx reports a standalone pipeline or would your lab’s goal be to handle a dual-purpose workflow and report on PGx + Diagnostic findings.
