throughout the day in dynamic environments. Typically route planning for the next day is
then done by sending all the work in batch to the route optimization system.
Batch Processing: Executing a series of non-interactive jobs all at one time. The term
originated in the days when users entered programs on punch cards. They would give a
batch of these programmed cards to the system operator, who would feed them into the
computer. Batch jobs can be stored up during working hours and then executed during the
evening or whenever the computer is idle. Batch processing is particularly useful for
operations that require the computer or a peripheral device for an extended period of time.
Once a batch job begins, it continues until it is done or until an error occurs. Note that batch
processing implies that there is no interaction with the user while the program is being
executed.

commodities, transportation of people, money or goods, and navigation of waters between
different states. Interstate commerce is regulated by the federal government as authorized
under Article I of the U.S. Constitution. The federal government can also regulate commerce
within a state when it may impact interstate movement of goods and services and may strike
down state actions which are barriers to such movement.
Inventory: is the goods and materials that a business holds for the ultimate goal of resale
(or repair)
Invoice: Is a commercial document issued by a seller to a buyer, relating to a sale transaction
and indicating the products, quantities, and agreed prices for products or services the seller
has provided the buyer. Payment terms are usually stated on the invoice. These may specify
that the buyer has a maximum number of days in which to pay, and is sometimes offered a
discount if paid before the due date. The buyer could have already paid for the products or
services listed on the invoice.
Invoice management system (e-billing): Invoice Management System is a cloud based
product primarily targeting at small and medium business to create and manage their
invoices. Companies exchange enormous number of invoices daily, both in electronic and
paper formats. The real obstacle lies on how efficiently and quickly the invoicing process is
handled from order initiation to delivery and payment for goods or services. An invoice

management system helps to simplify and organize this process and thereby enhance
process transparency.
IoT technology: The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical devices, vehicles, home
appliances, and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and
connectivity which enables these things to connect and exchange data, creating
opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems,
resulting in efficiency improvements, economic benefits, and reduced human exertions
IVR system: Interactive voice response (IVR) is a technology that allows a computer to
interact with humans through the use of voice and DTMF tones input via a keypad. In
telecommunications, IVR allows customers to interact with a company’s host system via a
telephone keypad or by speech recognition, after which services can be inquired about
through the IVR dialogue. IVR systems can respond with pre-recorded or dynamically
generated audio to further direct users on how to proceed. IVR systems deployed in the
network are sized to handle large call volumes and also used for outbound calling, as IVR
systems are more intelligent than many predictive dialer systems.
Just in Time (JIT): An inventory strategy companies employ to increase efficiency and
decrease waste by receiving goods only as they are needed in the production process,
thereby reducing inventory costs. This method requires that producers are able to accurately
forecast demand.
Key Performance Indicators (KPI): is a type of performance measurement. An organization
may use KPIs to evaluate its success, or to evaluate the success of a particular activity in
which it is engaged. Sometimes success is defined in terms of making progress toward
strategic goals, but often success is simply the repeated, periodic achievement of some level
of operational goal (e.g. zero defects, 10/10 customer satisfaction, etc.).
Kitting: The assembly or packaging of components, parts or finished products into a new
single item. This light assembly operation is sometimes performed in foreign trade zones or

screwdrivers for sale to consumers.

one platform.
Landed Cost: The total cost of a landed shipment including purchase price, freight,
insurance, and other costs up to the port of destination. In some instances, it may also
include the customs duties and other taxes levied on the shipment.
Last Mile: It was originally used in the telecommunications field but has since been applied
to supply chain management. Transporting goods via freight rail networks and container
ships is often the most efficient and cost-effective manner of shipping. However, when
goods arrive at a high-capacity freight station or port, they must then be transported to
their final destination. This last leg of the supply chain is often less efficient, comprising up
to 28% of the total cost to move goods. This has become known as the last-mile problem.
The last-mile problem can also include the challenge of making deliveries in urban areas
where retail stores, restaurants, and other merchants in a central business district often
contribute to congestion and safety problems.
Last mile delivery by bicycle: this service uses bicycle messengers for carrying and
delivering items by bicycle. bicycle messengers (also known as bike or cycle couriers) are
people who work for courier companies (also known as messenger companies) carrying and
delivering items by bicycle. Bicycle messengers are most often found in the central business
districts of metropolitan areas. Courier companies use bike messengers because bicycle
travel is less subject to unexpected holdups in city traffic jams, and is not deterred by parking
limitations, fees or fines in high density development that can hinder or prevent delivery by
motor vehicle, thereby offering a predictable delivery time.
Last mile delivery by bicycle service provider: provider of bicycle delivery service like

LMS (logistics management system): capitalize on making improvements in freight
management, load building and optimization, mode and carrier selection, freight rating and
audits, plus load tendering and real time logistics. Logistics firms that use this software gain
a competitive advantage over their rivals, as it allows them to successfully deal with cost
pressures such as rising fuel prices, increasing loads as a result of customer demands, and
the trend towards smaller, more frequent dispatches. These lead to more frequent and
timely deliveries, which then increase in satisfaction and returning clients.

are sometimes regarded as their own mode, but these normally also fall into the other
categories. In general, transportation is used for the movement of people, animals, and

National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC):is a standard that provides a comparison of
commodities moving in interstate, intrastate and foreign commerce. It is similar in concept
to the groupings or grading systems that serve many other industries. Commodities are
grouped into one of 18 classes—from a low of class 50 to a high of class 500—based on an
evaluation of four transportation characteristics density, stow ability, handling and liability.
Together, these characteristics establish a commodity’s ‘transportability.

Batch jobs can be stored up during working hours and then executed during the evening or whenever the computer is idle. Batch processing is particularly useful for operations that require the computer or a peripheral device for an extended period of time.
