GLOBALISATION
HANNAH HALLIDAY
GLOBALISATION
• Globalisation gives us one perspective which doesn’t give
us the reality of everyday situations. It may give us one
perspective such as age however it wont give us any
more, e.g. gender (which is usually male dominated),
ethnicity, sex etc.
• There is the American ideology which in film shows that
things are not always as they seem, for example, they
would use the nuclear family which doesn’t represent
society as there are a number of different family types
such as lone-parent families.
• America pump their ideology in the people so that their
views can change.
AMERICAN IDEOLOGY
• Ideology is sometimes identified as a body of ideas
reflecting the social needs of an individual, group, class,
and culture.
• Nearly every movie presents us with ways of behaving
whether that be negative or positive and therefore offers
us an implied ideology.
• Every film has a slant based on the director's sense of
right and wrong which may be an ideological perspective
that privileges certain characters, institutions and
cultures.
INDEPENDENT FILMS
• Independent films are more likely to represent reality. They
show how the British sees themselves and the world
around them.
• They serve many diverse cultural purposes- the issues
that effect them and relationships between groups and
societies.
• They also push the boundaries on gender, ethic
groupings, national identities and regional identities.
• The films that are made by independent film makers,
usually raise tackling issues that do happen in everyday
situation.
• They make about 20 films a year whereas Bollywood make
at least 1000.
WHAT MAKES A FILM
BRITISH?
• There is a test that the BFI have set up that you must earn
a certain amount of points for your film to be seen as
British. There are 31 points that can be achieved and you
have to get at least 16 points to qualify. There are four
categories:
• Cultural content- the film was filmed in the UK, it has
British actors, it was filmed in English language or it has a
British subject matter.
• Cultural contribution- it reflects British culture.
• Cultural hubs- the music and effects are done in the UK.
• Cultural practitioners- the people who are working in/on
the film are from Britain.
FILM EXAMPLE-
THIS IS ENGLAND.
• Cultural hubs- They had a UK based production
company (Big Arty Productions).
• Cultural practitioners- The director is British and
the cast and crew were from the UK.
• Cultural content- This film was set in the UK and
had British actors.
