2.1 Trend this year
In thisthought-provokingvisual story,PopularFashionMagazine SavoirFlairrevealssome of the
fashion,beauty,art,andcommerce trendsthatare emergingfor2017 and 2018. SavoirFlairtook
informationfromWGSN (Global FashionStylingNetwork)andotherresources.
2.2 Psychotropical
“Psychotropical” is an emerging trend for 2017-2018 that is a subset of the psychedelic
movement. Psychotropical fashions are defined by vibrant palettes, vivid tropical patterns
and prints rendered by digital engineering, and warped visual cues borrowed from nature
(like sunsets and tropical undergrowth). Psychotropical apparel, beauty, and accessories are
denoted by a “hyper-real perception of nature”, underscored by bright synthetic colorways.

2.3 Futurism
Futuristic fashion for 2017 and 2018 is being described by trend analysts as “post-human”,
which is inspired by artificial intelligence and illustrated by tech-driven design and a new
generation of technical materials that are made from robust threads and metallic filaments.
Properties of post-human apparel are: ultra light, highly breathable, protective, and thermo
regulating (capable of regulating your body’s temperature), while futuristic fashion is
defined by otherworldly aspects like embossed textures, bespoke fabrics, liquid or metallic
finishes, and glowing LED lights inside of mesh materials. Futurism is further supported by
the rise of 3D-printed clothing, footwear, and accessories, led by brands like The Unseen,
Nike and Intel.

2.4 Surf Gypsy
The “surf gypsy” trend, a subset of bohemianism, is inspired by global travels to beach
destinations. Resort and sportswear brands find themselves intertwined in this trend, with
Emilio Pucci, Marques Almeida, and Missoni beginning to define the surf gypsy aesthetic
with rainbow-hued collections that feature a relaxed, surf-inspired vibe. The surf gypsy
embraces an extremely vivid palette that features all the colors of the rainbow in a single
outfit, as well as typical beach fare like swimwear, sarongs, and cover-ups. The future trend,
however, relies on more technically crafted fabrics that promote long-term use.

Chapter 3
3.1 Different Seasons
For everything there is a season -- this applies to fashion just as much as anything else in life.
Fashion divides itself into seasons which sometimes may be tough to keep up with.
Fashion is split into four seasons. These seasons are Spring/Summer, Fall/Winter, Resort and
Pre-Fall. The two major seasons, however, are Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter.
Spring/Summer starts in January and runs until around June, and Fall/Winter goes from July
to December. Resort collections overlap the first two seasons and are offered around late
October through December. Pre-Fall collections appear in stores a bit before Fall/Winter
collections come in.
3.2 Fashion Week

3.3 Resort and Pre-Fall Introductions
Because Resort and Pre-Fall aren't as major as Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter, they don't
have their own Fashion Weeks. They do, however, show around the same time. Most
designers choose simply to shoot their looks on models and send them out to press, while
other -- generally bigger brands -- hold shows or presentations to introduce their Pre-Fall
and Resort collections. In general, you'll see Resort collections around June and Pre-Fall
collections in December.
3.4 Trends for Fall/Winter 2017-2018
Padding, protective lines and cosy knits came together on the catwalks, perhaps as a shelter
from the doom and gloom of a world in crisis. But if trends are truly heading for more and
more comfort, fashion is retaining its sense of fun, its color and glamour, always with a
sense of determination and self-assuredness. In short, this season it's all about celebrating
the individuality of style through the multitude of trends waiting to be worn.
3.4.1 Sterling silver
Seen at so many shows this season, silver flirted with the conceptual, creating hybrids with
padding and pleats, and providing a modern twist on classic quilted jackets which were
posed simply on the shoulders.

3.4.2 Folk
Mixing, juxtaposing and stitching together what may first seemat odds, this season, the
designers quenched their thirst for folk, mixing and matching unexpected pairings of prints,
materials and tones.

3.4.3 Ostrichfeathers
A flurry of feathers for a touch of couture, the common denominator at Balenciaga,
Alexander McQueen and Sonia Rykiel. White only, and soft, stylish and poised.

3.4.4 Double denim
Heading to the top of the trends list this season are total denim looks à la Brooke Schield
circa 1984, ultra luxury and impeccably tailored for maximum everyday elegance.

3.4.5 Plastic chic
Something a little less ordinary for Fall/Winter 2017-2018 as the runways saw color blocking
coated in plastic. Re-worked rain coats at the highest end of the style scale, dreamt up by
Raf Simons at Calvin Klein, Miuccia Prada at Miu Miu and Massimo Giorgetti at Emilio Pucci.

3.4.6 Cosy knits
It's knitting but not as your grandmother knows it. A modern twist on the cosy classic where
wool is broken down and reinterpreted in new and poetic ways, dabbling with fringing,
sometimes stretched out or infused with a touch of Hygge, the Danish craze for comfort.

3.4.7 Multicoloredfur
With technicolored rainbows and bright bursts of color, fur is not holding back this season.
An antidote to winter blues seen at Miu Miu, Prada and Fendi.

3.4.8 Office wear
Fashion can be a sociological study, and the new trend for gray business suits is intriguing.
Styled-up tailoring for business girls straight from the office, or on their way out.

3.4.9 Blankets
Padding was prevalent on this season’s catwalks, suggesting that style is giving way to
comfort. Creating new proportions, blankets came in quilted piles, made from technical
materials for ever new hybrid forms.
From left to right: Sonia Rykiel, Junya Watanabe and Mulberry
3.4.10 Galactic prints
From flying saucers to stars via the all-over astronaut prints at Chanel, fashion took flight for
new frontiers with interplanetary inspirations. Think little 60s-style dresses, silver-studded
denim and silk as light as zero gravity.
From left to right: Chloé, Chanel, Isabel Marant
3.4.11 Left undone
For an artisanal feel, a left-unfinished effect is on its way next winter. A surplus of strings
and materials bring a certain charm to a look.
From left to right: Maison Margiela, Alexander McQueen and Sacai
3.4.12 Working girl
From secretary to business woman, the new generation of white-collared women workers
has arrived. They're unwilling to reveal their true figure until their feet which are poised on
brightly colored stiletto heels.
From left to right: Céline, Fendi and Balenciaga
3.4.13 Sportswear
Although padded jacket mania is starting to die out this winter, the fashion world is feeling
more and more intrigued by sportswear. Think spiced up ski jackets, rainbow tracksuits,
retro gilets and cosy fleeces. Totally modern and no holds barred.
From left to right: Miu Miu, Chloé and Sacai
3.4.14 Matrix
Black. Patent. Leather. As if in tribute to Trinity, the Matrix character, think futuristic
dominatrix: sexy silhouettes for modern mistresses.
From left to right: Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent and Proenza Schouler
3.4.15 Turquoise
Never so prevalent, Lucite green and turquoise tones are totally modern while respecting
the rules of elegance. Worn as a full look, the burst of color electrifies a wardrobe.
From left to right: Valentino, Nina Ricci and Philosophy Di Lorenzo Serafini
3.4.16 Shoulder pads
For now, it seems square shoulders are here to stay. An exercise in style seen on strict,
exaggerated suit jackets and coats in a quest to create new forms of elegance and
movement to get further in a world in crisis and fight from the front in style.
From left to right: Isabel Marant, Balenciaga and Jil Sander
3.4.17 Scarf prints
Florals, bandana prints and paisley chanelled a hippy vibe as the prints played with
conventions, flirting with kitsch on the border between bohemian and bourgeoisie.
From left to right: Gucci, Alexander McQueen and Etro
3.4.18 Leopardprint
Diana Vreeland’s favorite print prowled down the catwalks once again this season as
Leopard spots were seen at Dolce & Gabbana, Michael Kors and Etro. Always a touch on the
wild side, and not one to change its spots, the star print continues to tame the town, stylish
by day and glamorous by night.
From left to right: Dolce & Gabbana, Michael Kors Collection and Etro
3.4.19 Checks
Following in the wake of the 90s spirit, a geometric game of checked flannel to wear open,
to layer over a leotard or knit or alone as a top for the ultimate look of nonchalence.
From left to right: Chloé, Gucci and Yeezy
3.4.20 Wildfur
At once preppy and wild, a mix of genres to stay warm in the modern world.
From left to right: Michael Kors Collection, Dries Van Noten, Louis Vu
3.4.21 Lamé
Sparkles, sequins in gold and silver shine brightly with a resolutely contemporary energy,
reflecting a desire for a dazzling elegance, made all the more magnificent when worn as a
full look.
From left to right: Wanda Nylon, Bottega Veneta and Michael Kors Collection
3.4.22 Secondskin
Cosy materials in sand and camel tones with soft lines: sheepskins are the natural choice for
next winter. Dynamic and athletic with an urban edge, with a wild version at Coach 1941,
mountainesque at Hermès and hip hop at Marc Jacobs.
From left to right: Marc Jacobs, Coach 1941, Hermès
3.4.23 Think pink
Next winter is in the pink with fringes and pearls. It's a color as refined as it is graphic for a
new idea of evening wear.
From left to right: Emilio Pucci, Emporio Armani, Prada
3.4.24 Paddedjackets
For Fall/Winter 2017-2018, the designers have restyled puffa jackets to the extreme with
oversized quilted padding and comfy, chic detailing to counter the subzero temperatures.
From left to right: Versace, Tod's and Vetements
3.4.25 Black & Blue
A flash of inky blue to light up the night in a duel chromatic look of the two chicest colors.
From left to right: Giorgio Armani, Saint Laurent and Versace
3.4.25 Polkadots
A simple but effective motif, polka dots zere all over this season. Use and abuse on one
condition: stick to black and white.

Spring/Summer 2017 trends
Spring/Summer 2017 takes fashion back to the drawing board, re-defining a confident look
with exaggerated lines, metallic effects, graphic prints on new-generation trenches and
bright candy pink and sunshine yellow. With color and light as watchwords for the season,
see the trends to look out for in 2017.
Shocking pink
At the top of our list for the trends of the season is pink, as candy pink, baby pink, deep
cherry and raspberry provide a sweet new way to see fashion through rose-tinted glasses.
From left to right: Céline, Balenciaga, Valentino
Oversized shoulders
Square shoulders were particularly present this season, an exercise in style seen on strict,
exaggerated suit jackets in a quest to create new forms of elegance and movement.
From left to right: Jil Sander, Balenciaga, Céline
Sports parkas
Urban sports silhouettes were prevalent at Versace, Joseph and Stella McCartney, with
dynamic lines and big volume on nylon parkas and parachute pleats, with street accents and
plenty of movement.
From left to right: Joseph, Versace, Stella McCartney
Flower power
Florals are no surprise for spring, but next season brings blossomprints up to date in all-
over Seventies style, flirting a little with the kitsch.
From left to right: Michael Kors Collection, Balenciaga, Chloé
Origami world
Pleats were front and center at Marni, Loewe and Jil Sander, with drapes, volume at the
shoulder and statement sleeves all tapping into the minimalist vibe of the moment.
From left to right: Marni, Loewe, Jil Sander
Arty pop
From criss-cross stripes to in-your-face color, fashion has gone graphic for summer 2017.
Think vibrant, geometric prints, as spotted on the knitwear at Proenza Schouler, the poppy
pleats at Chloé and the Sonia Rykiel poncho.
From left to right: Proenza Schouler, Chloé, Sonia Rykiel
Jumpsuits all day
Much more than a trend, the jumpsuit is now a seasonal staple that tops editors’ wishlists as
an easy piece for summer every year. Uptown girl or fashion boilersuit, choose from evening
glamour and daytime cool.
From left to right: Hermès, Isabel Marant, Vanessa Seward
Leggings are back
Fashion reinvented sportswear basics as ready-to-wear, this season more than ever.
Leggings made for super slim silhouettes on the runway, in spandex with integrated shoes at
Balenciaga, or velvet at Y/Project and ‘caviar’ lace at Louis Vuitton.
From left to right: Y/Project, Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga
The 1970s sleeveless sweater
The revival of a key 1970s piece, that patterned sleeveless sweater your grandpa once had is
back in vogue, tapping into the ugly-beautiful trend and treading a delicate line between
good and bad taste. How to elevate the kitsch to the ranks of the cool.
From left to right: Michael Kors Collection, Gucci, Prada
Metallic finish
Urban mermaids or space warriors? A deep blue wave broke over the runways at Kenzo,
Maison Margiela and Chanel, with iridescent textures and futurist accents.
From left to right: Kenzo, Maison Margiela, Chanel
Hide-and-seek cut-outs
At Dior, Lanvin and McQueen, designers showed once again the power of suggestion. Sheet
textures left a little to the imagination and subtle cut-outs revealed a hint of what lay
beneath in a hymn to black.
From left to right: Lanvin, Dior, Alexander McQueen
Girls in the hood
All-black neo-hoods that knotted under the chin on capes, hooded T-shirts and reworked
oversized hoodies provided a new take on an essential shape.
From left to right: Hood by Air, Balenciaga, Paco Rabanne
Saturday night fever
Sequins and shimmer set the runways on fire this Fashion Week. Minis are out and long
sparkling sheaths are in, along with Seventies references and Bianca Jagger-style pyjamas.
From left to right: Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Nina Ricci
The trench coat 2.0
Because fashion is all about reinterpretation, even basics need to be reinvented every once
in a while and this season it was all about the trench. Cropping up on catwalks across all four
fashion capitals, from Marni to Balenciaga and Michael Kors, each collection saw its own
personal stamp on this classic wardrobe essential.
From left to right: Marni, Balenciaga, Michael Kors Collection
Yellow fever
From lemon to fluorescent, yellow was a chromatic shot in the arm that lit up the runways
in all four cities. Summer 2017 looks bright.
From left to right: Chloé, Bottega Veneta, Gucci
Underwear as outerwear
No longer confined to the top draw, bras were seen over shirts, dresses and T-shirts in a
lesson in how to modernize the classics for 2017.
From left to right: Kenzo, Prada, Alexander McQueen
Round shoulders
It’s all in the sense of proportion next season, especially when it comes to shoulders. At
Marni, Isabel Marant and Jil Sander, they were round, with gentle curves heralding a
contemporary new femininity.
Lamé drama
All things shiny made for a resolutely contemporary energy with a new kind of high-octane
elegance reflected in head-to-toe gold and silver.
From left to right: Mulberry, Saint Laurent, Isabel Marant
Seventies prints
Geometric checks, flowers, losanges and curves heralded a 1970s revival and seriously
colorful summer.
From left to right: Miu Miu, Givenchy, Prada
Babydoll girl
Candy colors and doll faces charmed at Fendi, Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini and Chloé, a
pretty trend that flirted with lingerie styling, lace and delicate bows and ribbons. Get set for
your most romantic summer yet.
From left to right: Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini, Chloé, Fendi
Puffball shoulders
Fashion's Eighties obsession continues, with variations on the popular should theme as
oversized cap sleeves gave way to giant puffball shapes and fabric effects.
From left to right: Dsquared2, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana
Mens' shirts
Menswear is an eternal source of inspiration for womenswear designers and the men’s shirt
took to the Spring/Summer 2017 runways with a nonchalant twist for the season. Pale blue
and pinstriped, it was deconstructed as a dress at Balenciaga, Joseph and Alexander Wang.
Punk spirit
Junya Watanabe, Haider Ackermann and Coach all painted a picture of a militant,
emancipated and inspired femininity, to bring punk back to the runway for Spring/Summer
2017. Think studded leather and plenty of black, paired with a sober charisma and a snarl.
From left to right: Coach, Junya Watanabe, Haider Ackermann
Leather fringing
A play on fabric and movement that’s more minimalist than you might think. White jackets
and dresses were entirely fringed at Hermès or more discreet and Western-influenced at
Ralph Lauren, with Rodarte’s punk bride taking the cake.
From left to right: Ralph Lauren, Hermès, Rodarte
After-hours robes
Masculine sensuality met boudoir elegance as wrap jackets and gowns showed yet again
that loungewear isn’t best kept for after dark.
From left to right: Haider Ackermann, Lanvin, Burberry
Polka dots
We saw a softer, more rounded geometry on the runway this season. A simple but effective
motif, the polka dot was conceptual at Comme des Garçons, ballerina-style at Dior and
retro Italian at Dolce. Use and abuse, on one condition: stick to black and white.
Fro left to right: Commes des Garçons, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana
Patchwork
Designers mixed, matched and juxtaposed anything and everything that clashed, with
vintage fabrics and unexpected pairings of prints, fabrics and finishes.
From left to right:: Giamba, Marc Jacobs, Loewe
Space style
Head-to-to white and a slimsilhouette is the minimalist take on futurist fashion this season,
accented with patches slogans and moto stripes.
From left to right: Courrèges, Dior, Paco Rabanne

Psychotropical fashions are defined by vibrant palettes, vivid tropical patterns and prints rendered by digital engineering, and warped visual cues borrowed from nature (like sunsets and tropical undergrowth). Psychotropical apparel, beauty, and accessories are denoted by a “hyper-real perception of nature”, underscored by bright synthetic colorways. Properties of post-human apparel are: ultra light, highly breathable, protective, and thermo regulating (capable of regulating your body’s temperature), while futuristic fashion is defined by otherworldly aspects like embossed textures, bespoke fabrics, liquid or metallic finishes, and glowing LED lights inside of mesh materials. Futurism is further supported by the rise of 3D-printed clothing, footwear, and accessories, led by brands like The Unseen, Nike and Intel.

Resort and sportswear brands find themselves intertwined in this trend, with Emilio Pucci, Marques Almeida, and Missoni beginning to define the surf gypsy aesthetic with rainbow-hued collections that feature a relaxed, surf-inspired vibe. The surf gypsy embraces an extremely vivid palette that features all the colors of the rainbow in a single outfit, as well as typical beach fare like swimwear, sarongs, and cover-ups. The future trend, however, relies on more technically crafted fabrics that promote long-term use.

Chapter 3 3.1 DifferentSeasons For everything there is a season -- this applies to fashion just as much as anything else in life. Fashion divides itself into seasons which sometimes may be tough to keep up with. Fashion is split into four seasons. These seasons are Spring/Summer, Fall/Winter, Resort and Pre-Fall. The two major seasons, however, are Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. Spring/Summer starts in January and runs until around June, and Fall/Winter goes from July to December. Resort collections overlap the first two seasons and are offered around late October through December. Pre-Fall collections appear in stores a bit before Fall/Winter collections come in. 3.2 Fashion Week Fall/WinterFashionWeekisheldinFebruary,showcasingtrendsforthe upcomingwinter. They do, however, show around the same time. Most designers choose simply to shoot their looks on models and send them out to press, while other -- generally bigger brands -- hold shows or presentations to introduce their Pre-Fall and Resort collections. In general, you'll see Resort collections around June and Pre-Fall collections in December. 3.4 Trends for Fall/Winter 2017-2018 Padding, protective lines and cosy knits came together on the catwalks, perhaps as a shelter from the doom and gloom of a world in crisis. But if trends are truly heading for more and more comfort, fashion is retaining its sense of fun, its color and glamour, always with a sense of determination and self-assuredness. In short, this season it's all about celebrating the individuality of style through the multitude of trends waiting to be worn. 3.4.1 Sterling silver Seen at so many shows this season, silver flirted with the conceptual, creating hybrids with padding and pleats, and providing a modern twist on classic quilted jackets which were posed simply on the shoulders.
