- 12.9 million figure is a substantial increase in the health worker gap. Up from 7.2 million gap identified in 2012. Investment in health workers is one of the best buys in public health. In addition, evidence is starting to emerge on the broader socio-economic impact of investments in health workforce, in terms of improving synergies with education, creating career opportunities for women, facilitating decent employment in the formal sector and fuelling economic growth.
