Early attempts at establishing a glassmaking industry in America met with failure, as the first factory built in Jamestown, Virginia in 1608 shut down within a year due to a famine. Later attempts by the Jamestown colonists in 1621 and 1622 also failed, with the second attempt ending in 1624 due to an Indian attack and lack of workers. The glassmaking industry was successfully reestablished in 1739 when Caspar Wistar built a plant in Salem County, New Jersey, which operated until 1780.
