Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
2. I have been thinking of this long and hard, and the thoughts on my mind have been about our beloved Spike. Who, since I first signed up here, has kept me smiling . W hen I have been down , h as always a joke or a funny story to tell, or just there to talk too! I can say, without a doubt that you, Spike h ave been a good friend to me, yet we have never met face to face. From mstones83 And I know you think of this place as a home, and you treat everyone as apart of your family, so I have ask ed everyone t o write some thing that they think that you would want to hear. So I hope you enjoy, and get well soon!
3. You're kind of a mess aren't you always sick and all. But how worse it always seems you always find your way out and get better. Your strong and somehow I know you will recover from this one as well. You along with very few made Rootforum1 what it is nowadays. Your somewhat harsh humour along with the endless stream of cats flooding our forums always put a smile on my face. About those cats, it seems like you turned it into some kind of hype since some people took the habit and started posting pictures as well. From Dakuipje The forum games aren't the same without you it once again proofs how much 1 person can make a difference. We've set up a Arcade section with real games. It seems like I do not have talent for arcade and since I cannot bear to see Bell's as a Champion on more then halve of the games I need you to break her scores ! Your a legend, our legend.
4. I'm sitting here smiling thinking of all the funny things you've said to me and all the times you made me laugh till i cried. We joined the forum around the same time and have become really good friends from the start. I'm actually shocked you haven't been banned for some of the things you've said on the forum but your just so cheeky and funny that you get away with it. I'm used to talking to you almost everyday and I 'm starting to get withdrawal symptoms from not seeing pictures of cats posted all over the forum. Like Wil has said we now have a arcade section and when you get back we'll have to have a mini competition, even thou i already know I'll win Your a HUGE part of our extending RF1 family and without you here it just doesn't feel complete. We all miss you loads and can't wait for you to come back. Anyone that hasn't had the honour of meeting Spike should still take the time to post in here because our Spike is one of the funniest, cheeky, naughty and most friendly people you could ever wish to meet and his captured a piece of all our hearts. Your in all our hearts and prayers Spike and we wish you well. *BIG HUGS* Love Bell's
5. wwwww Spike, you are surely missed. I just left a post asking if there was any news or update on you. I miss my pm's. You were so excited about getting a ex. quality of Iron Man. One PM you sent was "hey Pamric, did get over to DVX section I posted Iron Man" I go there, part 2 isn't working. I send you back a pm. You emailed me back, I know, I know I'm uploading now, watch for it. Back and forth about Iron Man. Then you pm'd me about a new game and told me I need to get over there and see it. You are a vulgar man, haha, with one thing on your little perverted mind. You are just a endless source of comedy. The forum is simply not the same without you Spike. Love Pamric Do you want me to help you with your Kitty's? I can pick them all up, but won't tell you where I live. o/j So with all these little notes to you, I hope you'll see how much we miss you and need you back here. But we also want you to be well. Muahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh a big one sent to you hun
6. Hey Spike my friend! I miss seeing your crazy cats on the board and your cheeky remarks every day! You are in my heart and on my mind many times over and I can't wait to see you back here posting and playing forum games and the new arcade. Don't just hang out looking for the pretty nurses, if they haven't got high speed wireless there then get well and get home so you can get back to us! That jello and pudding cups just aren't worth it!! Get well really soon!!!! Love Iamwatchinwho
7. I really hope that you get well soon. From KrillBill Hope you get better soon. From Wyldragon From Scorer From Sachak
