JOB HUNTING: WHAT I HAVE NOT GOT
It’s very easy when things aren’t going well to fall into an unresourceful state
where you begin to dwell on what is going wrong in your life.
I call it the “what I have not got” spiral.
Particularly with job hunting, which is a daily reminder of the job you don’t
have, the money you don’t have, the bills you can’t afford to pay and so on.
These are all things that can nibble away at your self-esteem and motivation, to
the point where it can be hard to get up in the morning.
If this happens to you, the problem is you’re not likely to get a job now, next
week, or anytime soon. This is where people can fall into the trap of despair
that can grip them even for years.
if you focus on what you have not got, your reasons for moving forward will
always seem to get smaller and smaller.
You can not afford the luxury of a negative thought when it comes to how to
find jobs. You need to be focused, organized, and feeling positive.
Here’s what you can you do to turn this around, or avoid it ever happening to
you in the first place…
There was a guy called Viktor Frankl who was a World War II Auschwitz
survivor. He wrote a book about his experiences called Man’s Search For
Meaning.
Basically the central idea is that no one can take away your ability to decide
what a set of circumstances means to you.
No matter how crappy the hand you might have been dealt right now, you get
to decide how you play the cards.
For example. Two guys grow up in the same ghetto – one ends up in jail, the
one ends up a motivational speaker.
2. They both had the same crappy experiences, but one chose to allow their
background and circumstances to define them in a negative way, the other
chose to rise above his circumstances and use his experiences to reach for a
better life.
When life throws me a challenge, I always think to immediately ask “what’s
good about this situation?” or “how can I use this situation in a positive way?”
At first you might think, “yeah right, there’s nothing good about my situation”,
but you can start to train your mind to look for something positive. And
looking for something positive also means being more open to seeing
opportunities.
Windows of opportunity can open around you all the time, but if you don’t
take them they close and life moves on.
If you’re focused on what you have not got, then it’s easy to have opportunities
just pass you by without you realizing it.
If you want to get a job now, not six months from now, you need to be open
to opportunities that present themselves.
In my book Get That Job Now I also talk about how you can set yourself up to
create opportunities, and the book gives you a plan to follow as well.
You might find it useful, it’s available on Amazon.
By the way, reading can be thirsty work, so why not grab yourself a glass of
water. But just make sure your glass is half-full, and not half empty.
Here’s to your success.
