Geothermal energy harnesses steam reservoirs trapped in hot rocks below the Earth's surface. It has a very small environmental impact and is a reliable and cheap source of energy. Geothermal plants convert steam from reservoirs into electricity through dry steam or binary cycle plants. While it has a small land footprint and is virtually limitless, geothermal energy has high initial costs to drill wells and uses water. The largest geothermal site in the US is The Geysers in California.
