Orthodox Christianity is the dominant religion in Georgia, accounting for 84% of the population, while Muslims make up 10% and Armenian Christians 4%. Georgia has a long history, with human skulls found in Dmanisi dating back 1.8 million years, and the Bagrationi dynasty being the second oldest royal family in the world. In the 19th century Georgia became part of the Russian Empire and then the Soviet Union in 1921 after a brief period of independence, and it fought a war with Russia in 2008 over separatist regions.
