Volunteering is a great passion for a Bayview Mills teen who devotes most of her time
chairing the United Way of Greater Toronto’s student cabinet.
Tonya Boozary, 18, who lives in the Bayview and York Mills area, has been volunteering
since the age of 15 when she started helping out at Sunnybrook Hospital and with the
Epilepsy Foundation. Boozary spent the last two years on the United Ways’ student cabinet.
Doing good for others seems to be in Boozary’s blood. Her parents are avid volunteers but
she was most inspired by her brother Andrew who also spent most of his teens unsel shly
helping out the community.
"My parents drove me at a young age to help others, as well as my brother who
volunteered at many charitable organizations and was also a member of the United Ways’
student cabinet," she said.
Over the past two years Boozary and her older brother Andrew have been working on their
own socially conscious fashion and athletic line in which all the pro ts go to Doctors
without Borders. The collection can be viewed at www.principiacollections.com.
At the same time, Boozary gives her full concentration to the student cabinet, which
involves eight high school students who volunteer their time in running student
fundraisers, organizing events and giving input on future youth programs. Boozary spent time as one of the eight volunteers until she was
named student chair.
Boozary said it has been a great experience volunteering with other teens that share the same enthusiasm for helping others.
"I’ve really liked it because I’m working with other teenagers who share the same ideas and goals that I do and that helps make our work easier,"
Boozary said.
Annette King, manager of Youth and GenNext Markets, has worked with Boozary for the last three years and says Boozary has worked tirelessly
in helping not only the student cabinet but also the other charities she has been part off.

"Tanya is an important role model at the United Way because she extends herself by getting involved at hospitals and charitable organizations
and she takes that experience back to her school and to the United Way," King said.
King said the mission of the student cabinet is to develop young people who care about helping teens in all neighborhoods by engaging them
in community events and projects that help make all communities stronger.
Boozary will also be one of the judges at the Get in Way Awards in which she and seven other judges will be choosing two elementary and two
high school students as winners.
When she graduates next year, Boozary’s heartfelt concern for others will continue to play a major part of her life. As of next year, she plans on
doing a bachelor in sciences and a minor in vocal performance at either McGill University in Montreal or Western University in London, Ontario.
Boozary has aspirations of being a doctor or an opera singer.
