Let It Go: How to Revise Your Resource Sharing Policies & Open Up Your Library Collections for ILL Lending, Presentation at the 2015 Connecticut Library Association Annual Conference.
Libraries are ungoing serious 'shifts' in how they are used by members. This presentation is offered as thought starters for addressing some of those 'shifts.'
Research shows that library users opt for convenience. Books nearer the door circulate more, and books from middle shelves circulate more than those from top or bottom shelves. Laura Johnson, Continuing Education Coordinator at the Nebraska Library Commission, will discuss how we can streamline the library user experience and offer services that speed up, remove uncertainty, and are present at point-of-need.

ILEAD USA - Finding Alternative Funding ResourcesBrian Pichman
Today, people are constantly restrained from turning their "ideas" into actions. The root of the problems is budgetary restraints. Want to hear about how other people are funding their next project without fighting for the grants everyone else is struggling to find/get? This session will provide an ample list of avenues to fund your next project. Most importantly, we will work together on using word-tracks and other tactics to sell our ideas to others. Tired of dealing with the typical sales person who doesn't seem to offer discounts? Let's sell back to them our ideas and get them to pay to use their products/services.
Could your library’s signage do with a makeover? The session will look critically at many types of library signs and review the positive and negative aspects of library signage. We will also address how to conduct a signage audit and the importance of library branding. Dr. Curtis Rogers is the Communications Director for the South Carolina State Library and has been working in the library and information science field for 31 years. He has worked at the Union (SC) Carnegie Library, the Charleston County Public Library and has taught courses at the USC School of Library and Information Science. He has conducted seventy-six signage audits to date in South Carolina.
Professionalism for the Wildlife Control OperatorLaura Schmidt
How do you present a professional appearance to your customer--and make the customer want to hire you trust you, and pay you good money to solve the wildlife problem? We'll show you!
Some of the things I find important to take into account, when preparing interesting lecture or presentation. I tried to include various styles and developments in this area, as well as my own perceptions. In this version there is no animation, and I largely removed parts connected with the clever use of it. Also almost all the pictures are mine (which explains their comparably poor quality :o)), but on the other hand it makes my presentation more intimate and unique as I think :o)

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

41. Practice • Practice • Practice Robert’s Rules on Interlibrary Loan 1. Be nice to Inter Library Loan Department. It is cheaper than you driving or flying to somewhere else. 2. If HPL has the item you want, they will not interlibrary loan another copy. ( This is really an HPL rule on interlibrary loan ) 3. Remember bribery in small doses works. Bribes and compliments can be interchangeable! 4. Texas universities must share with you for free. Always use them first. 5. Genealogical materials are rarely loaned by public libraries, but universities usually will. 6. Microfilm (not fiche or microcard) is usually only loaned by universities, almost never by public libraries.
42. Practice • Practice • Practice Robert’s Rules on Interlibrary Loan 7. Always inquire about buying copies of fiche (usually 25¢ or 50¢ per sheet of fiche). 8. Books (and other stuff) made before 1900 generally do not get loaned (Hint: they may be on microfilm!). 9. Library of Congress may loan if they are only source and they have two copies and you send a groveling and pleading e-mail. They will make copies (reasonably priced) or microfilm (very expensive). 10. If book is simply unavailable for loan, inquire of stingy library to check index or photocopy names in index of interest. Then order pages from index. Good to have unlimited long distance phone plan.
43. Practice • Practice • Practice Robert’s Rules on Interlibrary Loan 11. Most of the time map photocopies are available for cheap. Some universities, if map is very rare, they will stick it to you. It’s not personal, they stick it to everyone. If alumnus or alumna, send ugly letter to Alumni Association after you get photocopy. Otherwise, accept fate. 12. For maps, microfilm, and manuscript collections (even on microfilm) from university libraries, chances are very good they have developed finding aids or even indexes on their own (undergraduate and graduate students are cheap slave labor). E-mails cost nothing and may work, but a sweet, unctuous, and solicitous phone call, completely ignoring the words genealogy or family , works better. A food thank you gift insures your questions will be welcome in the future.
