Growth…
For years wethought that development and progress is associated with
growth of a certain country which is not totally wrong.
• Growth is needed for progress and development.
• Growth comes from different color, different impact on how a certain things
to grow.
• The growth we always think is that the more we can be able to consume the
wealthier we are that exceeds the limit for what is only for us to consume.
• First world countries of rich countries strive growth and eventually achieved
it.
• But growth of rich countries becomes danger and create risk for our planet.
• As the rich countries wants growth even more, which also means more
consumption compared to what they need.

What is Progress
andDevelopment?
Is development and progress the same?
Progress – often measured in terms of
milestone or targets achieved.
Development – comprehensive process
that involves growth and improvement.
• Progress and development it is the
grow that usually think cannot be
supported by our planet, it creates
heavy burden to our planet and other
countries.

How to
determine
developed and
developing
countries?
•Countries may be classified as either developed or developing based on the Gross
Domestic Product (GDP) or Gross National Income (GNI), per capita, the level of
industrialization, the general standard of living, and the amount of technological
infrastructure, and several other potential factors.
• The Human Development Index (HDI) is an alternative metric for development status
created by the United Nation that is used to assess the social and economic development
levels of countries based on life expectancy, educational attainment, and income.

Forget ‘developing’ poorcountries, It’s
time to ‘de-develop’ rich countries
• It means that we should stop for more growth for
rich countries and start to re-evaluate and re-
calibrate its overconsumption and passing the
boundaries for what amount that they should only
consumed.
As Rich Countries perform overconsumption, Poor
Countries can never catch up because resources are
devoured.

Human Flourishing
Hickel’s Paradigmof de-development
A wise consumption of every country and
improve the way of living of everyone
instead of focusing on quantity and over
consumption.
Traditional Notion of Growth and
Consumption
Only focus on continues consuming without
regards of equality or what is just meant for
them to consume. In simple term greed to
everything they can get.
14.
The Idea ofDe-developing
De-developing means that we need to change our way of growth and consumption for us
to have sustainable economy worldwide. It is the idea of gearing each countries economy
towards equality not quantity.
How Much is
enough?
•The books asks why
Westerners work so many
hours per week and lead lives
that revolve around money,
business and financial
decisions.
• The book investigates the idea
of the Good Life and how
capitalism may have been the
key to it, but we have now lost
sense of the Good Life as
priority.

In Conclusion…
• JasonHickel is telling us that instead of focusing the poor countries to catch up rich
countries in growth and over consumption, we need to stop the growth of rich countries
and focus in stabilizing and fixing the right amount of consumption for the people of its
country allowing our planets resources can be equally be consumed by everyone.
• Human flourishing can be reflected as progress and development not by how vast we
can consume, but how well we can use and manage our planet resources as we achieved
progress and development.
